The 3rd annual MLB Spring Breakout is set to take center stage, showcasing the brightest prospects in baseball, particularly highlighting the San Diego Padres’ top minor league talents. With 91 of the top 100 prospects confirmed for participation, fans can look forward to an exciting lineup of 16 games scheduled from March 19-22.
This year marks the final iteration of the current format, as next season will introduce a single-elimination tournament style. This change, set to continue through 2028, will see champions crowned from both the Cactus League and the Grapefruit League, each featuring 15 teams. The decision to maintain the existing format for 2026 was made to avoid competition with the World Baseball Classic.
Among the standout players is No. 4 prospect Leo DeVries, who was traded by the Padres to the Athletics in exchange for Mason Miller and JP Sears. The A’s have also acquired ranked prospects Braden Nett, Henry Baez, and Eduarniel Nuñez, all of whom will be on the roster for the upcoming games.
Fans will be eager to see the matchup between the top two MLB prospects, as shortstops Konnor Griffin (No. 1, Pittsburgh Pirates) and Kevin McGonigle (No. 2, Detroit Tigers) face off on March 20 at 4:35 p.m. PT, broadcast live on MLB Network. Additionally, No. 3 prospect Jesus Made will represent the Milwaukee Brewers against DeVries for the A’s on March 22 at 1:05 p.m. PT, also on MLB Network. Eight of the 16 games will receive live coverage on MLBN, with others available on team networks or MLB.TV.
The Padres are scheduled to play their breakout game on March 21 against the Chicago Cubs in Mesa, Arizona, at 6:05 p.m. PT, with coverage on Padres.TV and 97.3 FM The Fan, their flagship station. Recently, MLB.com unveiled its new top 30 prospects for the Padres, with left-handed pitcher Kruz Schoolcraft now leading the list. Despite having pitched only 1.2 innings of professional baseball, Schoolcraft’s potential has garnered significant attention.
Catcher Ethan Salas, ranked as the No. 2 prospect for the Padres, is still highly regarded for his defensive skills. However, his offensive performance has raised concerns, especially after he missed most of last season. Salas will need to demonstrate his hitting ability to reclaim his status among the elite prospects in MLB.
The rosters for the Spring Breakout feature all 30 top prospects from each team, along with additional players chosen by organizations to maximize their talent pool. Final rosters will be trimmed to 23-27 players per team on March 18, solidifying the lineup for the games.
The Padres will bring all 30 of their top prospects, including players recently transitioned from the Dominican Summer League. Notable international talents include shortstop/second baseman Jhoan De La Cruz, who played a pivotal role in leading his DSL team to a championship, along with Taiwanese right-hander Lan-Hong Su and RHP Jeferson Villabona. Additionally, shortstop Dylan Grego, drafted in 2025, and newly drafted catchers Ty Harvey and Truitt Madonna will also be part of the original roster.
For the Cubs, catcher Moises Ballesteros, ranked No. 55 in MLB, tops their roster, while right-hander Jaxon Wiggins, the No. 58 prospect, is expected to take the mound for the Cubs. The Padres have several pitchers who could start, but Schoolcraft is the only one currently ranked on MLB Pipeline, sitting at No. 88.
Stay tuned for an updated Padres roster and a game preview following the final roster announcements.
