Capitals’ T.J. Oshie Sidelined for 2024-25 NHL Season Over Chronic Back Ailment
Oshie’s Battle with Chronic Back Issue
The escalating severity of Oshie’s back problem over the years has compelled him and the team to contemplate his withdrawal from the ice. “The previous season posed significant challenges for me, my loved ones, and my fellow players… I’ve spent the offseason exploring and seeking long-term remedies for my injury,” expressed Oshie, 37, in an official statement.
Oshie’s commitment to regaining complete health remains unswerving. In the interim, he pledges to provide unwavering support and assistance to his team and the organization. He profoundly acknowledged the relentless support from fans during this trying period.
Oshie’s Injury Impact on His Performance and the Team
Oshie’s recurrent back complications, among other injuries, restricted his participation to merely 52 games in the previous year. His last appearance in a minimum of 60 games dates back to the 2019-20 season. Consequently, Oshie’s output has gradually declined, with a record of just 25 points in the last season. As a result, the Capitals have been progressively shifting their focus towards their ongoing youth initiative.
Despite these setbacks, Oshie remained optimistic about his future in the game. In April, he expressed his desire to continue playing, provided he could secure an assurance that his back issues would not interfere. He stressed the need to find a permanent solution to his problem before he could consider a comeback.
The Quest for a Solution
In 2023, Oshie underwent a minor double ablation surgery on his back, aiming to alleviate some of the pain. However, he termed it as a “temporary solution,” and his issues persisted. He had been collaborating with Dr. Kerry Johnson from Johnson Spinal Care in Minnesota seeking ways to maintain his health for the game.
Oshie’s condition had become increasingly incapacitating, leading to instances where he could do nothing more than lie on the floor in pain, unable to perform everyday tasks like picking up his children. This drastic impact on his quality of life played a significant role in Washington’s decision to keep him off its roster.
Support from the Capitals and Future Prospects
“We pledge our support to T.J. as he endeavors to find a permanent resolution to his recurring injury,” stated Capitals’ GM Chris Patrick. He emphasized that Oshie continues to play a crucial role in the team and the organization, and they fully endorse his efforts to overcome his health hurdles.
Despite the ongoing predicament, Oshie has refrained from discussing retirement. However, it was apparent when the New York Rangers ousted Washington from the postseason in April, and he was the last one to leave the ice.
“I’m 37 years old now. You just never know,” Oshie reflected, emphasizing the importance of cherishing those moments on the ice. As he navigates these challenges, Oshie has one more year remaining on his current contract, with a cap hit of $5.75 million.
