Miami Marlins Overpower Toronto Blue Jays with Stellar 8-1 Win
Dane Myers brought the crowd to its feet as he belted a three-run home run and tallied a career-best five RBIs. Griffin Conine also shone with three hits and an RBI. The Miami Marlins, with their 8-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, clinched a series win against Toronto for the first time since 2009.
Jesús Sánchez’s Consistent Performance
Jesús Sánchez of the Marlins carried forward his stellar form, scoring three runs for the second consecutive game. The Marlins were under the charge of bench coach Luis Urueta for the penultimate game of the season due to manager Skip Schumaker’s return to California on account of a family medical issue. Urueta will also oversee the season finale on Sunday.
Dane Myers Makes Stunning Comeback
Myers, who was recently reactivated from the 60-day injured list, left a lasting impression. He had suffered a fractured left ankle in a fit of rage following his ejection in a disappointing 10-6 loss at Cincinnati on July 13. “To witness him perform so brilliantly after enduring two challenging months is truly an incredible moment,” expressed Urueta. Myers admitted the mental rehabilitation was somewhat harder than the physical. He confessed, “Watching the game from the hotel while injured was tough.”
Impressive Debut for Xzavion Curry
Xzavion Curry made his Miami debut memorable by allowing only one run and two hits over five innings, leading Miami to its third consecutive win. “He did an outstanding job. He attacked the zone and threw strikes,” applauded Urueta. Darren McCaughan followed up with a solid performance, pitching the final four innings and securing his second save in as many opportunities.
Marlins’ Series Win Breaks Eight-Game Streak
The Marlins’ series victory over Toronto broke an eight-game winless streak. The last time they swept a three-game road series against the Blue Jays was back in June 2009. Despite Nathan Lukes hitting his first career home run for the Blue Jays, Toronto faced its ninth loss in the last 11 games.
Blue Jays Struggling in September
The Blue Jays’ struggles continued as they moved to a disappointing 7-16 record in September. Star player Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a forgettable day, going 0 for 4 with a strikeout, remaining one hit short of the 200-mark.
Rookie Yariel Rodríguez Ends Season on Low Note
Blue Jays starter Yariel Rodríguez concluded his rookie season on a bitter note, losing his fifth straight decision. “I know I can perform better than this,” Rodríguez expressed through a translator. The 27-year-old right-hander allowed three runs and four hits in five-plus innings, walked two, and struck out five.
Marlins Continue to Score in the Sixth
The Marlins continued to build their lead in the sixth inning. Myers delivered a bases-loaded double off the top of the right field wall, triggering reliever Brendon Little’s exit. Jhonny Pereda added an RBI single off Erik Swanson. Myers rounded off his fantastic day with a home run off Génesis Cabrera in the eighth, his third of the season.
Upcoming Game and Roster Updates
In preparation for the final game of the season, the Blue Jays recalled RHP Nick Robertson from Triple-A Buffalo and optioned LHP Easton Lucas to the Spring Training Complex. LHP Ryan Weathers is slated to start for Miami in Sunday’s season finale, while the Blue Jays’ starter remains unnamed.
