Rangers Seize Victory from the Jaws of Defeat to Overwhelm Angels
Jonathan Ornelas emerged as the hero of the day for the Texas Rangers, delivering a clutch two-run, pinch-hit single in the ninth inning. This monumental hit helped the Rangers orchestrate a stunning comeback, outscoring the Los Angeles Angels 9-8 on a riveting Saturday night. Nathaniel Lowe also shone, contributing three hits, including a homer, and driving in three vital runs. Lowe’s bases-loaded walk in the ninth marked the onset of the Rangers’ remarkable rally.
Dane Dunning (5-7) held the fort for Texas, pitching a scoreless inning and clinching the win, before Kirby Yates locked down the game with his 33rd save of the season.
Rangers’ Determination and Grit Overcome Angels’ Early Lead
“We were looking at a pretty steep hill to climb, but the guys didn’t quit. They kept battling,” commented Rangers’ manager Bruce Bochy, reflecting on the dramatic game. “It was a real roller coaster ride. There were some blips on both sides, but it was certainly a game to remember.”
The Angels’ rookies Gustavo Campero and Niko Kavadas showed their mettle, hitting back-to-back homers, while Logan O’Hoppe tied his career-high with four hits and scored twice. However, despite taking an early 7-1 lead after three innings, the Angels couldn’t hold on and suffered their fifth consecutive loss.
Ornelas’ Heroics Overturn Angels’ Dominance
The ninth inning began with Jose Quijada (2-2) of the Angels on the mound. The Rangers seized their opportunity, loading the bases on two walks and a hit batter. Lowe’s third run, brought home on another walk, reduced the Angels’ lead to 8-6.
Replacing Quijada, rookie right-hander Ryan Miller was unable to stem the tide, surrendering Ornelas’ game-changing two-run single. An errant throw back to the infield by Campero allowed the Rangers to score the decisive go-ahead run.
“Ornelas was in a tough spot, but he came through with a terrific hit,” praised Bochy. Despite the pressure, Ornelas successfully replaced Leody Taveras and made a significant impact on the game.
Lowe’s Homer Initiates Rangers’ Fightback
The game began with Lowe’s 15th home run of the season, giving Texas an initial 1-0 lead. However, the Angels quickly responded, with Michael Stefanic’s RBI double, Taylor Ward’s run-scoring grounder, and Jack Lopez’s RBI single putting them ahead 3-1.
The Angels’ lead was further extended by Campero’s first career homer, a three-run shot in the third inning, followed by Kavadas’ fourth of the season for a 7-1 lead. Yet, the Rangers’ spirit remained undaunted. They clawed back with a run in the fourth and sixth innings, and two more in the eighth, setting the stage for Ornelas’ heroics in the ninth.
Potential End of an Era for Rangers’ Andrew Heaney
Andrew Heaney, the Rangers’ starter, may have played his last game for the team. He gave up seven runs on 10 hits over four innings in what could be his final start after signing a two-year, $25 million deal before the 2023 season. Despite the challenging outing, Heaney expressed gratitude for his time with the Rangers, highlighting his World Series win and the opportunity to play alongside his teammates.
Upcoming Clash: Rangers vs. Angels Season Finale
Looking ahead, the Rangers will have Nathan Eovaldi (11-8, 3.96 ERA) on the mound for their season finale against the Angels, who will counter with Jack Kochanowicz (2-5, 4.01 ERA) in his 11th start since his MLB debut on July 11.
