Unexpected Changes in the American League Division Series Lineup

Tyler Freeman’s Unexpected Injury

Tyler Freeman, a versatile player for the Cleveland Guardians, suffered an oblique injury. As a consequence of this unfortunate event, Freeman was removed from the American League Division Series roster before the second game against the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

Ángel Martínez Steps Up

Replacing Freeman was the adaptable rookie Ángel Martínez. Despite featuring in 43 games this season for the AL Central champions, Martínez was not included in the initial 26-man playoff roster. In his tenure with Cleveland, Martínez has demonstrated his adaptability by playing in six different roles.

Vogt’s Regretful Announcement

Manager Stephen Vogt revealed that Freeman’s left oblique was strained during a batting practice against Ben Lively in the non-game day training. The practice was held at Progressive Field, which was off-limits to press members.

“Such things happen,” admitted Vogt, revealing sympathy for Freeman. “It’s been a tough few weeks for him, going through a lot. He’s significantly contributed to our team’s successes and has been integral to the ethos we’ve built this year. He’ll continue to be with us, but the roster change was necessary. Our hearts really go out to Tyler.”

Freeman had a promising track record against Detroit this season, with a .385 batting average (10-for-26) and three RBIs in 12 games. He also held a promising 3-for-6 record against Detroit’s ace, Tarik Skubal, who started the second game.

Looking Ahead: Game 3

In addition to this roster shift, Vogt confirmed that Alex Cobb will be the starting pitcher for Game 3 in Detroit on Wednesday. Cobb concluded the regular season on the injured list due to a blister on his right middle finger, after being traded from San Francisco in July.
