Sportsbooks Clamp Down on NBA Prop Bets Amid Integrity Concerns
Several prominent sportsbooks, including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, and ESPN BET, have decided not to offer under bets on NBA players with two-way or 10-day contracts. This action aims to thwart any potential attempts at manipulation.
Background: The Betting Restriction on NBA Players
This restriction came as a consequence of the NBA’s conversations with sportsbooks during the summer. The discussions were triggered by the ban of ex-Toronto Raptors forward, Jontay Porter, from the league. Porter was embroiled in a gambling plot that revolved around prop bets on his game statistics. A spokesperson for the NBA expressed satisfaction over the steps taken to maintain the integrity of their games.
The Sportsbooks’ Response
FanDuel stated that it continually collaborates with its partners to ensure the available markets align with the set standards. Similarly, a DraftKings representative stated that they were in agreement with the NBA’s stance and appreciated the chance to discuss the matter. BetMGM also corroborated that it wouldn’t offer under betting on prop bets for selected players.
The Jontay Porter Case: A Wake-Up Call
Sportsbooks noticed dubious betting patterns on the under on Porter’s statistics in games played in January and March. At the time, Porter was under a two-way contract with the Raptors. He unexpectedly left a game against the LA Clippers on January 26 and another against the Sacramento Kings on March 20 after participating for just a few minutes. Porter admitted to conspiracy to commit wire fraud on July 10 and awaits sentencing on December 18 in New York.
Understanding Two-way and 10-day NBA Contracts
Two-way contracts are typically offered to players who frequently transition between the G League and the NBA. In contrast, 10-day contracts enable teams to recruit players for a maximum of 10 days or three games. These contracts have now become a focal point in maintaining the integrity of the game and the betting industry.
