The turning point came when Max Domi, Leafs forward, passed up a golden opportunity to shoot on a 3-on-1 in the second period. Moments later, Kreider doubled the Rangers’ lead to 2-0 off a delayed penalty, thanks to an exquisite pass from Zibanejad.

A significant statistic from the game was Lafreniere’s continued scoring run, having registered at least a point in each of the first five games. This feat ties him with Tomas Sandstrom (1986-87) and Mike McEwen (1978-79) for the second-longest season-opening point streak by a Rangers player aged 23 or younger. Darren Turcotte (1990-91) holds the record with an 11-game run.
