Natural Grass to Grace Sacramento’s Provisional Stadium

The Athletics temporary ballpark in Sacramento, California, has decided to use natural grass over synthetic turf. This decision comes as a response to concerns over the potential health risks of playing on an artificial surface in a city known for its extreme heat.

Transition from Oakland to Sacramento

The A’s, having wrapped up their final season in Oakland recently, are set to inhabit Sutter Health Park for at least the next three years. They will be sharing this space with the Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. The Athletics are planning to relocate to Las Vegas by 2028.

Natural Turf vs. Synthetic Turf Debate

Major League Baseball (MLB) had initially proposed installing synthetic turf at the Sacramento facility. The rationale was that this would provide a more resilient surface for a stadium due to accommodate two teams. However, the MLB Players’ Association expressed worries about how the synthetic turf would intensify the heat during summer months. This was a significant concern given Sacramento’s record-breaking heatwave earlier this summer, which saw an average temperature of 103.8 degrees from June 23 to July 12.

Final Verdict: Natural Grass Prevails

According to a conclusive evaluation by MLB’s field consultant, Murray Cook, natural grass is indeed feasible at Sutter Health Park.

A league spokesperson stated, “Throughout this process, we’ve strived for a collaborative approach with the MLBPA, incorporating feedback from both major and minor league players about the amenities, facilities, and playing conditions in Sacramento.”

He further confirmed, “Based on players’ feedback and advice from MLB’s veteran field expert, we, along with the A’s and Sutter Health Park, have decided to stick with a natural grass field. Our primary, mutual concern is ensuring the safest and best playing surface for the A’s, River Cats, and visiting players.”

Renovations and Future Plans

In preparation for the 2025 season, MLB plans to refurbish Sutter Health Park’s clubhouses, dugouts, bullpens, and batter’s eye. Additionally, if the construction of their new fixed-roof ballpark in Las Vegas experiences delays, the A’s have the option to extend their stay in Sacramento for an additional season.
