A’s Fall Short Again, Lose to Royals 7-6 in Spring Training Clash

Kansas City Royals

The Oakland Athletics’ search for a winning spark continues as they fell to the Kansas City Royals 7-6 in a Friday afternoon spring training game. With this loss, the A’s now sit at 1-5 in their preseason record, though the games remain inconsequential for the standings.

The A’s started strong, taking an early lead in the first inning. Two walks set the stage for Max Muncy, who is vying for the starting third base position. Muncy capitalized on a fastball down the middle, driving it into center field for a double that brought in both runners, giving Oakland the initial advantage.

Left-hander Jeffrey Springs took the mound for his first outing of the spring, but it proved to be a mixed bag. After a solid first inning, Springs faced difficulties in the second, allowing four runs to cross the plate, including a three-run homer from Bobby Witt Jr. that erased the A’s early lead. Springs exited after 39 pitches, a workload in line with the coaching staff’s plan to gradually ramp him up for the regular season.

Oakland answered back in the third with a run of their own, thanks to a double from Carlos Cortes and a couple of productive groundouts. The excitement peaked in the fourth when shortstop Jacob Wilson stepped up to the plate with a runner on first. He launched a 429-foot home run to left field, marking his first long ball of the spring and tying the game at five runs apiece. Muncy would then put the A’s back in the lead in the fifth with his own home run.

However, the Royals were not finished. In the seventh, lefty Brady Basso struggled, loading the bases with a double and two walks. Just one strike away from escaping the jam, Basso gave up a two-run double that swung the momentum back to Kansas City.

Despite a late-game rally in the eighth, highlighted by a couple of hits from promising prospects, including Leo De Vries, the A’s were unable to tie the game, ultimately falling 7-6.

The offense showed signs of improvement after a sluggish start to spring training, but the A’s are still seeking that elusive victory. They will have another chance tomorrow when they face the San Francisco Giants at Hohokam Stadium. Right-hander Luis Morales is slated to make his second appearance of the spring after allowing one run in earlier innings, while the Giants will send veteran righty Tyler Mahle to the mound for his first outing of camp. The A’s will be hoping for a turnaround and a chance to secure one of those currently-meaningless wins.
