Capitals Edge Golden Knights 3-2 Behind Dubois’ Stellar Performance

In an electrifying matchup on Friday night, Pierre-Luc Dubois showcased his skills, netting two goals and adding an assist, leading the Washington Capitals to a narrow 3-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. The Capitals, who have found their stride post-Olympic break, notched all three of their goals in a dominant second period, with Jakob Chychrun contributing his 22nd goal of the season.

Despite a spirited third-period comeback from Vegas, highlighted by goals from Braeden Bowman and Tomas Hertl, the Golden Knights fell short, snapping their three-game winning streak. The Pacific Division leaders welcomed back five Olympians for this contest, including stars Jack Eichel and Mark Stone, who had been absent in their previous game against Los Angeles.

The Capitals, now just two points behind the New York Islanders for third place in the Metropolitan Division and also within striking distance of Boston for the Eastern Conference’s second wild card, improved their record to 2-0 since the Olympic break and have won six of their last seven games.

Dubois opened the scoring just 49 seconds into the second period, beating Vegas goaltender Akira Schmid high to the blocker side. His second goal came shortly after, as Aliaksei Protas set him up perfectly in front of the net, extending Washington’s lead to 2-0. Chychrun then added to the Capitals’ advantage with a shot from the right circle that slipped under the crossbar, making it 3-0.

The line of Dubois, Protas, and Tom Wilson was instrumental, contributing to all three of Washington’s goals, with defenseman Rasmus Sandin also playing a key role, as both Protas and Sandin recorded two assists each. Dubois, who had previously struggled with injuries and failed to score in his first six games this season, has now found his rhythm, tallying three goals and two assists in just three games since his return.

As the game progressed, the Golden Knights made a valiant effort to rally, with Bowman breaking up Logan Thompson’s shutout bid early in the third. Hertl’s power-play goal brought Vegas within one at 3-2 with 10:45 remaining, but despite several opportunities, including a late power play after Stone was called for high-sticking, the Golden Knights could not find the equalizer. Thompson remained sharp, fending off short-handed chances from Brayden McNabb and Mitch Marner, securing the victory for Washington.
