Blackhawks Continue Rebuild with Key Trades Ahead of NHL Trade Deadline

Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks are once again focusing on the future as they approach the NHL trade deadline. With the clock ticking down to Friday’s 3 p.m. EST cutoff, the team is busy reshaping its roster, opting to sell rather than add. Defenseman Connor Murphy was traded to Edmonton on Monday, followed by forwards Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach, who were also sent to the Oilers on Wednesday.

Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill expressed disappointment over the trades, highlighting the team’s commitment to growth. “It’s disappointing that you can’t continue to hang together and keep growing together,” he said. “They were all real committed to the growth of this group. With that said, certainly happy for them to get the opportunity, especially in Murph and Dicky’s case, just because of the age they’re at, you don’t know how many opportunities you get for this.”

Since their last postseason appearance in 2017, the Blackhawks have struggled, finishing last in the Central Division for the past three seasons. Selling players has become a familiar strategy for the franchise as they navigate another challenging campaign.

Defenseman Alex Vlasic acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the trades, noting, “We all kind of knew that this was part of the plan going forward. If anything, it is a little bit more sad just to kind of lose some of your buddies potentially. We talked about it as a team. We want to become a team where we’re not losing anybody, we’re keeping the guys that we have in here.”

Looking ahead, captain Nick Foligno and forward Ilya Mikheyev may also be on the move before the deadline. Foligno, in his third season with the Blackhawks, has had discussions with general manager Kyle Davidson regarding his future. “As of right now, I’m a Chicago Blackhawk, so I’m fully invested in what we’re doing,” Foligno stated after practice on Thursday. “But have obviously had that honest conversation and we’ll see where it goes.”

In the recent trades, Chicago acquired a second-round pick in 2028 from the Murphy deal, along with veteran forward Andrew Mangiapane and a conditional first-round selection in the 2027 draft from the Oilers. The first-round pick is top-12 protected, adding to the Blackhawks’ growing stockpile of assets.

With these moves, the Blackhawks now hold nine picks in the first two rounds over the next two years, having drafted 11 players in the first round over the last four years. The team’s development pipeline is crucial as they look to return to contention in the future. Currently, with a record of 23-28-10, they have 21 games remaining this season, starting with a matchup against Vancouver.

Mangiapane, who turns 30 on April 4, has had a mixed season with seven goals and seven assists in 52 games for Edmonton. He was in the minors at the time of the trade but is expected to get a fresh start with the Blackhawks. “He gets an opportunity to have a clean slate here,” Blashill said. “He’s been a good player in this league. He’ll get an opportunity to be a good player here.”

While it remains uncertain if Mangiapane will be available for the game against the Canucks, defenseman Wyatt Kaiser is slated to return from a lower-body injury. Meanwhile, defenseman Kevin Korchinski has been assigned to Rockford of the AHL.
