Montreal Canadiens Eye Outdoor Game with New Stadium Plans

Montreal Canadiens

Outdoor games in the NHL may have lost some of their luster for television audiences, but for those who attend, the experience remains unparalleled. Currently, the Montreal Canadiens stand as the only Canadian team yet to host an outdoor game, a situation that could soon change. According to Sportsnet’s insider Elliotte Friedman, the Habs are actively working to make this a reality.

Friedman builds on Renaud Lavoie’s earlier report about the Canadiens’ plans to construct a temporary outdoor stadium at Parc Jean Drapeau, which would accommodate 42,000 fans. The organization aims to have this venue ready for the 2028-29 season, and plans are in place for a women’s game to be part of the festivities. Given the popularity of the Montreal Victoire since its inception, this addition is expected to draw significant attention.

The Canadiens have previously participated in four outdoor games, starting with the inaugural regular-season outdoor match in 2003 against the Edmonton Oilers. They also faced the Calgary Flames in a Heritage Classic in 2011, the Boston Bruins in a Winter Classic, and the Ottawa Senators during the NHL Centennial game in December 2017. Montreal holds a 2-2-0 record in these outdoor encounters. Next season, they will add a fifth outdoor game to their resume, taking on the Winnipeg Jets on October 25 at Princess Auto Stadium.

Having attended the Winter Classic in Foxborough in 2016, I can personally attest to the unique atmosphere created by the 67,246 fans who gathered to witness the archrivals compete. The Canadiens emerged victorious with a 5-1 win, leaving the Montreal fans in attendance thrilled. However, the weekend was marred by a tragic incident involving Denna Laing, who suffered a severe spinal cord injury during a game the preceding day. Since then, she has become a powerful advocate for spinal cord injury awareness, earning the NHL Foundation Athlete Leadership Award for her efforts.

If the Canadiens successfully establish a temporary stadium and the NHL schedules a game there, I highly encourage fans to attend. The experience is sure to be unforgettable.
