Matthew Schaefer Makes Islanders History Despite Tough Loss to Sabres

New York Islanders

In a season that will forever be marked by the emergence of Matthew Schaefer, the rookie defenseman continued to etch his name in the New York Islanders’ record books during a challenging 4-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres. Schaefer’s assist on Anders Lee’s third-period goal pushed his season total to 57 points, surpassing Stefan Persson’s 1977-78 record for the most points by an Islanders rookie defenseman. Yet, despite this milestone, Schaefer was more focused on the game’s outcome than his personal achievements.

“Obviously you hear things and people say stuff,” Schaefer said when asked about breaking the record, “but, I mean, I don’t really care. I mean, obviously, it’s something pretty cool, and there’s so many great players that have gone through this organization and things like that. I’ve put up so many points, but at the end of the day, we’re in a playoff push right now and this was a big game.”

His focus shifted quickly to the game-winning goal scored by the Sabres, when Alex Tuch maneuvered around the net and set up Peyton Krebs right in front. Schaefer lamented, “I mean, if that doesn’t go in it’s still a tie game,” reflecting on the pivotal moment that overshadowed his historic night.

The Islanders faced additional challenges as they played without key contributor Simon Holmstrom, who was sidelined with an upper-body injury and listed as day-to-day by head coach Patrick Roy. In his absence, Anthony Duclair returned to the lineup after a lengthy break and skated alongside Mathew Barzal and Brayden Schenn on the second line. Duclair logged 11:29 of ice time but did not register a shot on goal. Holmstrom, who has tallied 19 goals and 30 points this season, had played in the previous game.

Roy had previously expressed hope for Duclair, recalling their successful chemistry earlier in the season when Duclair amassed 13 points in 13 games, including a hat trick against the Devils on January 6. However, since then, he has struggled to find his footing, managing just one point over the last eight games.

In a different aspect of the game, a fight broke out between Lee and Sam Carrick after Lee delivered a hit on the Sabres’ Josh Norris. Carrick, who initiated the altercation to defend his teammate, ended up down on the ice with a left shoulder injury and departed with a trainer. Roy commented on the incident, saying, “I thought that was — it was a very good non-call. I don’t think we needed that fight personally, but, I mean, [Lee] looked good.”

In other news, the AHL Board of Governors has unanimously approved the relocation of the Islanders’ minor league affiliate, Bridgeport, to Hamilton, Ontario, with the move set to take effect for the 2026-27 season.
