George McPhee Honored with 2026 Lou Lamoriello Award for Hockey Excellence

Las Vegas Golden Knights

The American Hockey Coaches Association has announced that George McPhee, the President of Hockey Operations for the Vegas Golden Knights, is the recipient of the prestigious Lou Lamoriello Award for 2026. This annual accolade honors a former college coach or player who has made significant contributions to the sport after their collegiate career. Named after the legendary Lou Lamoriello, a former Providence College standout and influential figure in hockey, this award recognizes excellence in the sport.

In a statement reflecting his gratitude, McPhee expressed, “I am honored beyond words to accept the Lou Lamoriello Award as the Frozen Four prepares to arrive here in Vegas. Lou is among the very best hockey minds and human beings to grace college hockey and the National Hockey League. Lou’s impact on these institutions, as well as the lives of thousands who have worked for him and competed against him, is extraordinary.” His words highlight the profound respect he holds for Lamoriello and the legacy he has built in hockey.

McPhee’s journey in hockey began at Bowling Green State University, where he earned the Hobey Baker Award in 1982 as a standout forward. He transitioned to the NHL, playing seven seasons with the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils before shifting his focus to management. His executive career saw him make significant strides with the Vancouver Canucks, Washington Capitals, and New York Islanders, eventually leading him to his current role in Las Vegas.

Since July 13, 2016, McPhee has served as the inaugural General Manager and President of Hockey Operations for the Golden Knights. His leadership was pivotal during the team’s remarkable inaugural season, which earned him the NHL General Manager of the Year Award in 2018. Although he transitioned out of the GM role in September 2019, he continued to shape the franchise’s direction as President of Hockey Operations, culminating in a Stanley Cup victory in 2023.

The Lou Lamoriello Award will be presented to McPhee on April 10 during this year’s NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Frozen Four. AHCA Executive Director Forrest Karr commented, “George is widely respected throughout hockey and has consistently made a positive impact during his career. His many contributions to the sport make him a natural choice for the Lou Lamoriello Award, and we look forward to presenting this well-deserved recognition during Frozen Four weekend.”
