Ducks Fall to Canucks, Playoff Dreams Dwindle After Overtime Loss

Anaheim Ducks

In a bittersweet twist of fate, the Anaheim Ducks celebrated their annual fan appreciation day on Sunday, distributing a treasure trove of gifts, from a brand new car to team jerseys and gift cards. Yet, the one gift that eluded the long-suffering Ducks faithful—a playoff berth—remained tantalizingly out of reach.

With a chance to secure their first postseason appearance since 2018, the Ducks suffered a disappointing 4-3 overtime defeat at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks, currently the NHL’s last-place team. This loss leaves Anaheim just one point shy of the playoffs with only two games remaining in the regular season.

The decisive moment came courtesy of Marco Rossi, who found the back of the net on a power play with fewer than 11 seconds left in the extra period, sealing the Ducks’ fate. This marked the seventh loss in their last eight contests, a stark fall from grace as they dropped from first to third in the Pacific Division standings. As they prepare to hit the road for their final two games, the Ducks will need to secure at least one point against Minnesota and Nashville or hope for a Nashville loss against San José.

It was Cutter Gauthier who struck first for the Ducks, scoring at 3:41 of a physical first period that featured seven penalties and two fights. Gauthier capitalized on a rebound from an Alex Killhorn shot just moments after the Canucks had killed a two-minute cross-checking penalty on Teddy Blueger.

The Canucks responded seven minutes later when Kirill Kudryavtsev unleashed a slap shot from the blue line. Though the shot was deflected in front of the crease, it slipped past Ducks goaltender Lukas Dostal, allowing Curtis Douglas to poke it home for his first goal of the season.

Vancouver took the lead shortly thereafter, with Jake DeBrusk scoring on a power play by redirecting a shot from Rossi from the low slot. The Canucks extended their advantage with a short-handed goal from Brock Boeser less than five minutes into the final period. Boeser intercepted a careless pass from Leo Carlsson intended for John Carlson and raced down the ice, outskating Carlson before deking Dostal and lifting the puck over him.

However, the Ducks weren’t done yet. Gauthier netted his second goal just 37 seconds later on a power play, bringing his season total to a team-high 40 goals. Carlsson then tied the game at 3-3 less than two minutes later, backhanding the puck over Canucks goalie Nikita Tolopilo while maneuvering away from the crease, marking his 29th goal of the season.

The sellout crowd at the arena roared back to life, with fans who had been booing moments earlier now chanting, “We want playoffs!” But those pleas went unanswered when Rossi scored while the Ducks’ Chris Kreider sat in the penalty box for slashing. Dostal did his best to keep the Ducks in the game during overtime, making five crucial saves while the Ducks were down a man.
