Despite the recent struggles that have seen the Mets swept by the Colorado Rockies at Citi Field, the team remains committed to one another as they navigate a challenging season. After dropping both games of Sunday’s doubleheader, the Mets now find themselves ten games below .500, with an offense that continues to falter. Yet, rather than placing blame, the players are focused on unity and improvement.
“It’s not great. We gotta be better,” Brett Baty acknowledged after going 0-for-7 with three strikeouts in the first game. “We’re putting in the work, all the guys are working really hard. Personally, I’ve been taking a bunch of swings and trying to get going. At the end of the day we just gotta be better.”
The urgency to improve is palpable throughout the organization, from the manager to the batboy. However, the pressing question remains: how will the Mets turn their fortunes around before it’s too late?
The silver lining for New York is that they still have time to right the ship. Their rough start, coming at the beginning of the season, allows them the summer months to regain their footing. Although the path ahead is uncertain, they at least have the opportunity to try.
“I was just raised like you gotta put your head down and keep working hard,” Baty said. “A lot of ball left to play. Our goal remains the same so put our head down and keep working hard.”
While the current situation may not be ideal, there is hope that the players will eventually rise to their potential. As the weather warms up, perhaps so too will their performance.
“They’re good hitters,” manager Carlos Mendoza stated. “They’ve done it for a long time.”
Regarding the need for a new voice in the clubhouse after the departure of several veterans during the offseason, Baty remains confident in the existing leadership. “I think we all have each other’s backs here and I think we all understand that we’re gonna keep working hard and we’re gonna have each other’s backs ’til the last day,” he said.
