Hurricanes Coach Optimistic About Ehlers and Nikishin for Playoffs Round 2

Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour expressed optimism regarding the availability of winger Nikolaj Ehlers and defenseman Alexander Nikishin for the upcoming Round 2 of the NHL playoffs. With extra time to recover from their respective injuries, both players could play a crucial role as the Hurricanes look to build on their recent success.

The Hurricanes, who secured the top seed in the Eastern Conference, completed a first-round sweep of the Ottawa Senators. However, Ehlers was a late scratch in Game 4 due to a lower-body injury, while Nikishin left the game in the second period after suffering a concussion from a hard hit delivered by Tyler Kleven, which left him momentarily incapacitated on the ice.

Having been the first team to advance to the second round, Carolina is set to face the winner of the Philadelphia-Pittsburgh series. The Flyers initially took a commanding lead by winning the first three games, but the Penguins have battled back to extend the series to a Game 6, adding an element of uncertainty to the upcoming matchups.

Neither Ehlers nor Nikishin participated in practice as the team returned to the ice, but there is no immediate rush to reintegrate them. Brind’Amour noted that for Nikishin, “everything’s trending in the right direction,” suggesting a positive outlook for his recovery.

In the meantime, veteran forward William Carrier filled in for Ehlers on the third line during Game 4, while Nicolas Deslauriers made his first playoff appearance since 2022, stepping into Carrier’s spot during a physical contest that featured multiple scrums. On the defensive front, Mike Reilly, who played 42 regular-season games, has been pivotal in helping the team navigate the absence of their top defenseman, Jaccob Slavin, for much of the season and currently holds the role of the team’s seventh defenseman.

To bolster their defensive lineup, Carolina has also called up 22-year-old Charles Alexis Legault, a fifth-round draft pick from the 2023 draft, from the American Hockey League to work with the team as they prepare for the next round.
