The Detroit Red Wings are poised for a bright future, particularly in net, thanks to two promising goaltending prospects: Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine. Cossa, selected 15th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, and Augustine, taken 41st overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, are currently honing their skills with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League. With fans buzzing about the possibility of one or both of these young talents becoming a formidable presence in goal for the Red Wings in the near future, the excitement is palpable.
Augustine, who grew up in South Lyon, Michigan, has deep ties to the Red Wings organization. As a lifelong fan, he spent countless hours watching games at Joe Louis Arena, captivated by the likes of Jimmy Howard, Pavel Datsyuk, and Henrik Zetterberg. Now, as he embarks on his professional career, he reflects on how meaningful it is to be part of the franchise he has admired for so long. “It means so much to me and my family as well,” he told WILX reporter Ben Shockley. “Me and my Dad used to go to games at Joe Louis Arena all the time. I mean, growing up in Michigan, I’ve always been a Red Wings fan. Hopefully one day, I’ll get to wear the Winged Wheel.”
During his college career at Michigan State University, Augustine’s accomplishments were notable. He became the first goaltender in school history to win the Mike Richter Award, recognizing him as the nation’s top player at his position. Additionally, he earned First Team All-American honors for two consecutive years and was a two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year. His impressive performance also landed him a spot as a Top Ten Finalist for the 2026 Hobey Baker Award.
Since joining the Griffins on an amateur tryout, Augustine has been adapting to the professional level. He describes the transition as smooth, noting, “It’s been good so far, it’s a little different than Michigan State, but it’s been good to get my feet wet. Looking forward to playing hockey down the stretch.” He appreciates the camaraderie among his new teammates, stating, “There are a bunch of new guys, but they’re all great and helped me feel like part of the team, which is awesome.”
Currently, Augustine finds himself third on the Griffins’ goaltending depth chart, behind Cossa and Michal Postava. While his competitive nature drives him to seek playing time, he remains supportive of his fellow goaltenders. “Obviously, I’d like to play every game, but they’re a great team with two great other goalies,” he explained. “I’ll just do anything I can to help them be ready to go, and obviously put myself in a position where if I’m called to play, I’m ready.” He added, “We’re trying to win the Calder Cup here, and the coaches are gonna play who they think will give the team the best chance to win the game, and I’m going to do everything I can to help support that.”
