Padres Fall to Cubs, Set to Host White Sox After Series Loss

Chicago Cubs

The San Diego Padres faced a disappointing defeat against the Chicago Cubs, losing 5-4 on Wednesday and marking their first series loss since the opening week of the season. Despite having several chances to secure a win, the Padres’ offense fell short and the bullpen struggled to contain the Cubs’ scoring.

In a moment of excitement, Miguel Andujar and Nick Castellanos both hit their first home runs for San Diego in the bottom of the fifth inning, breaking up what had been a no-hit shutout by Cubs pitcher Jameson Taillon. These home runs allowed the Padres to tie the game at 3-3, sparking hopes for a late-inning comeback. However, the Cubs quickly responded, manufacturing a run in the top of the sixth inning. After a leadoff walk to Michael Busch, a ground out advanced him to second, and a double by Matt Shaw put two runners in scoring position. Although Pete Crow-Armstrong grounded out, Busch scored from third, giving Chicago a 4-3 lead.

As the game progressed, Bradgley Rodriguez entered to finish the inning but could not prevent the damage. In the top of the eighth, Jason Adam took the mound after Rodriguez’s scoreless seventh but surrendered a solo home run to Shaw, extending the Cubs’ lead to 5-3. The Padres rallied in the bottom of the eighth when Chicago reliever Corbin Martin walked three consecutive batters, loading the bases for Fernando Tatis Jr. with no outs. Following Martin’s removal, Tatis Jr. managed to hit a fly ball to center, allowing a run to score and leaving runners at first and third as Manny Machado stepped up to the plate. Unfortunately, Machado hit a ground ball to second base, resulting in an inning-ending double play that effectively sealed San Diego’s fate.

With the loss behind them, the Padres will have a day off before welcoming the Chicago White Sox for a three-game series, looking to bounce back and regain momentum.
