Klim Kostin Signs Contract Extension with CSKA Moscow Through 2029

Klim Kostin, the former San Jose Sharks forward, is set to remain in the Russian capital for the long haul. CSKA Moscow announced on Wednesday that Kostin has signed a contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2028-29 season.

Kostin’s tenure with the Sharks spanned parts of two seasons, during which he made the transition to the Bay Area midway through the 2023-24 season and stayed through the 2024-25 season. In that time, he appeared in 54 games, netting six goals and totaling 17 points. However, his time with the Sharks was not without its challenges, as he also accumulated 42 penalty minutes and finished with a -16 rating.

After departing from the Sharks and the NHL following the 2024-25 season, Kostin returned to the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), signing with Avangard Omsk, a team he had previously played for during the 2020-21 season. Unfortunately, his stint in Omsk was brief, as he registered just two points in 21 games while posting a -7 rating. His time there ended with a trade to CSKA Moscow just ahead of the KHL’s trade deadline in January.

Joining CSKA Moscow reunited Kostin with some familiar faces from his time in San Jose, including defenseman Nikita Okhotiuk and forward Nikolai Kovalenko. Upon his arrival in Moscow, Kostin’s performance improved, as he tallied two goals and three points in 10 regular season games while maintaining an even plus/minus rating. However, he was unable to contribute offensively in the playoffs, where CSKA was eliminated by Avangard Omsk.

With this contract extension set to carry him through to the age of 30, it appears increasingly unlikely that Kostin will return to the NHL in the near future.
