Mets’ Replay Blunder Haunts Team in Narrow Loss to Angels

New York Mets

In a season already marred by struggles, the New York Mets found themselves grappling with yet another misstep, this time in the video replay room. The costly error came during the first inning of Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels in extra innings, where a critical call went unchallenged, ultimately impacting the game’s outcome.

With two outs in the inning, Nolan McLean surrendered three consecutive hits, the last of which should have been negated. Austin Slater made a brilliant throw from right field, tagging out a runner attempting to advance to third base before the runner at home crossed the plate. However, the Mets failed to challenge the call, and the run counted.

Manager Carlos Mendoza addressed the blunder, saying, “He missed it,” referring to Mets replay analyst Harrison Friedland. “We called, obviously, and he missed it. Harrison is one of the best at his job. Obviously, it ends up being a big play when you lose by one run, but I also think we had chances there and we couldn’t cash in.” The one-run deficit in extra innings meant that had the Mets successfully challenged the call, they could have emerged victorious.

Despite the replay mishap, Mendoza emphasized that it wasn’t the sole reason for the defeat. After tying the game in the seventh inning, the Mets had multiple opportunities to seize the lead but faltered at crucial moments. With the bases loaded and one out, the top of the order—featuring Bo Bichette and Juan Soto—was poised to capitalize. Instead, Bichette, who had earlier contributed an RBI single, grounded into a force out at home, followed by Soto striking out, ending the scoring threat.

Luck briefly favored the Mets when Bichette got a second chance in the 10th inning due to catcher’s interference, but he grounded into a double play, squandering another opportunity. “I just hit two sliders in the ground,” Bichette reflected postgame. “I think for me just trying to be too perfect, have the perfect swing for every pitch, and that’s not attainable.”

Adding to the Mets’ woes, they also lost Ronny Mauricio to a left thumb fracture just before Bichette’s first groundout. Mendoza expressed his disappointment, stating, “This one stings. We had our chances, but more times than not guys like Bo and Juan, those are the guys that we want at the plate to be in those situations. They’re gonna come through more times than not; today they just didn’t do it.”
