The New York Mets faced a tough defeat against the Washington Nationals, falling 9-6 in a game marred by defensive errors. While the Mets’ offense has often been a culprit in their losses this season, Tuesday’s game highlighted a different issue: a string of defensive miscues that proved costly.
Things started to unravel in the second inning. With the Mets leading 5-0, Nationals outfielder James Wood launched a deep drive toward the left-center field gap. Rookie Nick Morabito, making his MLB debut, appeared poised to make the catch but missed the ball, which deflected off his glove. Tyrone Taylor, who was backing him up, hesitated to pursue the ball, allowing Wood to complete an inside-the-park grand slam.
“He lost track of the baseball,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza remarked about Taylor’s misstep. “He went after it and didn’t know where the ball was. Yeah, that’s a tough break there.” Morabito echoed the sentiment, expressing disappointment in his failure to make the play. “He hit it pretty hard. Went back, and just missed it. Hit the palm of my hand. Should have had it,” he said.
As Mendoza noted, the inside-the-park grand slam was indeed a tough break, but it was just the beginning of the Mets’ troubles. In the third inning, the Nationals tied the game at 5-5 after a passed ball by catcher Luis Torrens allowed Daylen Lile to advance to second and CJ Abrams to score. This error shifted the momentum firmly in Washington’s favor.
The fourth inning brought more defensive woes for the Mets. Marcus Semien misplayed a ground ball and threw inaccurately to second base instead of opting for the sure out at first. This miscalculation left the Nationals with runners on second and third and one out. When Abrams hit a grounder to shortstop Bo Bichette, the throw to Torrens was timely, but the catcher failed to make the tag, allowing another run to score.
“He had a bad game today,” Mendoza said of Torrens. “Was one of those where he has to turn the page. Passed ball, doesn’t make the tag play. Wasn’t at his best today.” The Mets finished the game with two errors, contributing to a total of 24 errors this season, ranking them in the middle of MLB. However, four of those errors have come in just the last four games.
“Not good. Past four days or so,” Mendoza stated regarding the team’s defensive performance. “Making errors on routine plays. We’re a good team defensively. We showed that… But we’re in a stretch where we have to clean it up.” The team’s recent struggles halted their momentum, having won six of their last seven games prior to this loss. Nevertheless, the Mets remain optimistic that this performance is an outlier and that they can quickly return to their winning form.
“I don’t think it’s been in our identity,” Bichette said about the team’s defensive play. “We’ve been playing clean baseball all year. Days like this happen. We have to pick it back up and play better tomorrow for sure.”
