With the success of my previous article on hitting prospects, it’s time to delve deeper into the Diamondbacks’ farm system and highlight several players who have made significant strides either throughout the season or in recent weeks. Among these promising talents, Kayson Cunningham stands out as the organization’s top prospect, especially with Ryan Waldschmidt and Tommy Troy now contributing at the major league level.
Kicking things off is Kayson Caldwell, the D’Backs’ first-round pick from the 2024 draft, who struggled early in the 2026 season. In April, Caldwell posted a disappointing .143 batting average with a .157 slugging percentage over 70 at-bats. Despite the rough start, he managed to maintain a respectable on-base percentage thanks to 20 walks and five hit-by-pitches, which also helped him swipe eight bases. Caldwell’s early struggles can be attributed to a herniated disc he suffered in 2025, limiting his performance until he regained full health at the end of April.
Once healthy, Caldwell turned things around dramatically in May, hitting .301 with a .434 slugging percentage, including his first two home runs of the season. His overall numbers now stand at .223/.400/.299, with a .353 wOBA and a wRC+ of 108, indicating he’s performing 8% better than league average. His May resurgence underscores the importance of health in his development and showcases his potential.
Next on the list is Kayson Cunningham, the Diamondbacks’ 2025 first-round selection, who was heralded as the best pure hitter among high school prospects. After a lukewarm debut in 2025, Cunningham has dominated at the A-ball level this season. In 39 games with the Visalia Rawhide, he’s hitting an impressive .377 with a .509 slugging percentage, featuring ten doubles and four triples. His strikeout rate has dropped significantly from 28.8% to 17.5%, while his walk percentage has nearly doubled, showcasing his refined approach at the plate.
Cunningham’s future at shortstop seems promising, as his contact skills and speed on the basepaths may compensate for any limitations in power due to his 5’10” stature. He’s proving that he can be a valuable asset for the organization moving forward.
Meanwhile, Lujames Groover has established himself as a consistent force in the AAA Aces lineup. This season, he’s batting .327 with a .460 slugging percentage across 54 games, translating to a .406 wOBA and a 119 wRC+. Although his strikeout rate has risen to 17.3%, he has also improved his walk rate to 14.5%. Groover’s defensive skills at third base have improved, making him a viable option for the D’Backs, particularly with his impressive exit velocities, even if he has only hit three home runs this season.
Finally, JD Dix, drafted 35th overall in 2024, has shown remarkable potential as well. After a strong showing in the Arizona Complex League, Dix faced some challenges in A-ball but has rebounded in 2026 after a slow start. His May performance was particularly impressive, hitting .289 with seven home runs and stealing 11 bases without getting caught. Currently, he boasts a .241 average with a .487 slugging percentage, indicating a bright future ahead if he continues to produce at this pace.
As these prospects continue to develop, the excitement surrounding the Diamondbacks’ future remains palpable. Which of these rising stars are you most eager to see in the majors? Are there other prospects you believe deserve more attention? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
