Projected No. 1 overall pick Gavin McKenna stole the spotlight at the 2026 NHL Combine, a fitting role for a player destined for greatness. Sharing a connection with last year’s top draft choice, Matthew Schaefer, McKenna reflected on the impact the New York Islanders’ star has had on the game.
McKenna and Schaefer have crossed paths numerous times on the ice, and he had nothing but praise for the young phenom. “We’ve played many tournaments together,” McKenna noted during his time at the Combine. “He’s a character. He’s someone who’s fun to be around. He brings a lot of energy, and it’s no surprise to see how good he’s doing. He’s a hard worker and very talented, and very skilled. So, I think for everyone who’s played with him, and who’s got to know him, we are not surprised to see how well he’s doing.”
Indeed, Schaefer’s accomplishments speak volumes. Last season, he made history as the first unanimous Calder Trophy winner since Teemu Selanne in 1993. McKenna marveled at Schaefer’s achievements, stating, “It’s pretty ridiculous to see what he’s doing at such a young age. To be a unanimous Calder Trophy winner, that’s pretty special. What he’s been through as a person and the energy he brings…he’s someone who’s always making people laugh, and just brings that good energy. So, I’ve got to give so much credit to him.”
Looking ahead, McKenna expressed confidence in Schaefer’s future, declaring, “I think he’s obviously going to be an amazing player, and he’s shown that.” As the anticipation builds for the upcoming draft, all eyes are on both McKenna and Schaefer, two players poised to leave their mark on the NHL.
