Scott Gordon Joins KHL’s Traktor Chelyabinsk After Flyers Tenure

Philadelphia Flyers

In a notable move across the Atlantic, former Philadelphia Flyers interim coach Scott Gordon has been appointed as the head coach of KHL’s Traktor Chelyabinsk. This marks Gordon’s return to the bench after a five-year hiatus, stepping into a role with one of the league’s more competitive teams.

Flyers fans may recall Gordon, 63, for his brief stint during the 2018-19 season when he took over after the dismissal of Dave Hakstol. He led the Flyers to a 25-22-4 record over 51 games before returning to his previous position as head coach of the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms, a role he held for six seasons before Ian Laperriere succeeded him.

Before his time in Philadelphia, Gordon had a challenging tenure with the New York Islanders, where he compiled a record of 64-94-23 across parts of three seasons. Despite the struggles at the NHL level, Gordon played a critical role in developing numerous players, including Alex Lyon, Anthony Stolarz, Travis Sanheim, Phil Myers, Shayne Gostisbehere, Scott Laughton, Cam York, Morgan Frost, Tyson Foerster, and Joel Farabee during his six years with the Flyers organization.

Now, as he takes the helm at Traktor, Gordon inherits a team that reached the Gagarin Cup Final just a year ago. Traktor GM Alexei Volkov praised Gordon, stating, “We’ve had nothing but positive feedback about Scott Gordon from the start, both from his North American colleagues and the players he worked with. Everyone noted his high level of organization and culture in building key team processes: daily life, training, game preparation, and team relations.” Volkov further emphasized the impressive track record of players who have advanced to the NHL under Gordon’s guidance.

Gordon expressed enthusiasm about his new role, highlighting his readiness to leverage his extensive experience in this fresh setting. As he begins this new chapter, he will also encounter Flyers prospect Egor Zavragin, who was recently traded to Metallurg Magnitogorsk, a team that, like Traktor, competes in the Kharlamov Division of the KHL’s Eastern Conference.

After departing from the Flyers organization in 2021, Gordon has had a varied coaching career, including stints as an assistant coach for the San Jose Sharks and the USHL’s Youngstown Phantoms, before leading the USHL’s Waterloo Black Hawks. Now, he embarks on an international coaching journey, marking a significant step in his career.
