Astros Rally Late to Overcome Tigers 7-5 in Extra Innings

Houston Astros

In a thrilling display of resilience, the Houston Astros showcased their offensive prowess by overcoming an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the Detroit Tigers 7-5 in 10 innings at Comerica Park. The Astros’ victory marked their fifth consecutive series win, a season high, and brought them within two games of the .500 mark for the first time since April 10.

Despite a rocky start, with ace Hunter Brown on the mound, the Astros found themselves in a hole early. The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the second when Kerry Carpenter led off with a single, setting the stage for Zach McKinstry’s two-run homer, giving Detroit a 2-0 lead. The situation worsened for Houston in the third inning when an error by Raynel Delgado allowed Kevin McGonigle to score, extending the Tigers’ lead to 3-0.

The Astros, however, were not to be deterred. In the top of the seventh, Delgado redeemed himself after a tough fifth inning. After Jake Meyers reached base and advanced to second on a fielding error by Tigers first baseman Colt Keith, Delgado launched a 409-foot home run to right field, narrowing the gap to 3-2.

As the game progressed, the Astros managed to tie it up in the eighth inning. Isaac Paredes stepped up with a solo home run, his 11th of the season, sending a 402-foot shot to left field that leveled the score at 3-3. The excitement in the ballpark was palpable as the Astros battled back.

Things got tense in the ninth when closer John Hader faced control issues. After striking out Hao-Yu Lee, Hader walked Ben Malgeri and faced a bases-loaded situation after issuing walks to both McGonigle and Jahmai Jones. Displaying grit, he struck out Riley Greene to escape the inning without allowing a run.

In the 10th inning, the Astros seized their opportunity with Jeremy Pena as the ghost runner. Tigers reliever Kenley Jansen struggled with his command, issuing a four-pitch walk to Yordan Alvarez. Paredes then delivered with an RBI single, bringing Pena home and giving Houston their first lead at 4-3. Christian Walker then sealed the deal with a powerful three-run home run, his 19th of the season, extending the lead to 7-3.

Although the Tigers managed to close the gap with a two-run homer by Spencer Torkelson in the bottom of the 10th, it was not enough to overcome the Astros, who claimed a 7-5 victory and took three of four games in the series.

Looking ahead, the Astros return home for a six-game homestand, beginning with a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins. The pitching matchups for the series are set, with Peter Lambert facing Zebby Matthews on Monday.
