Joel Kiviranta’s tenure with the Colorado Avalanche has come to a close, as the versatile forward has signed a one-year contract worth $1 million to return to the Dallas Stars, the team announced on Wednesday. This move brings Kiviranta back to the franchise where he first launched his NHL career before making the switch to Colorado in 2023.
For the Avalanche, losing Kiviranta signifies the departure of one of their most dependable depth forwards. Following a career-high 16-goal performance in the 2024-25 season, expectations were high for Kiviranta to continue that momentum. However, injuries hampered his ability to contribute consistently throughout the season.
A lower-body injury early on sidelined him for several months, and upon his return, he faced additional health challenges. By the end of the season, Kiviranta had missed 31 of Colorado’s 82 regular-season games, finishing with just three goals and six assists for nine points in 51 appearances. These numbers, though disappointing, do not fully reflect his impact on the ice.
Even while dealing with injuries, Kiviranta proved to be one of Colorado’s most reliable defensive forwards. He played a crucial role on the penalty kill, showcasing his relentless forechecking and physical style of play, which earned him the coaching staff’s trust. According to Natural Stat Trick, during five-on-five play with Kiviranta on the ice, the Avalanche outscored opponents 20-12 and controlled 59.5 percent of the shots. He averaged 1:03 of shorthanded ice time per game, marking his fourth consecutive season of exceeding one minute per game on the penalty kill.
Kiviranta also made an appearance in five Stanley Cup Playoff games for Colorado this past spring, bringing his career postseason total to 56 contests between the Avalanche and Stars. Now, he returns to the team that first gave him a chance in the NHL.
After signing with Dallas as an undrafted free agent from Finland, Kiviranta spent his first four NHL seasons with the Stars before revitalizing his career in Colorado. Over 349 regular-season games, he has accumulated 38 goals and 31 assists for a total of 69 points, with his breakout 16-goal season in 2024-25 standing out as the pinnacle of his offensive contributions.
“We are excited to welcome Joel back to the Stars organization,” said Stars General Manager Jim Nill in a statement. “Our familiarity with Joel made signing him an easy choice, and his versatility as a player gives us some added flexibility to our lineup.” Kiviranta’s return also reunites him with a strong Finnish contingent in Dallas, which includes Miro Heiskanen, Roope Hintz, Esa Lindell, Arttu Hyry, and former Avalanche standout Mikko Rantanen.
