Four Former Blue Jackets Among Top Unrestricted Free Agents Still Available

Columbus Blue Jackets

NHL free agency may have hit a lull since July 1, but a number of unrestricted free agents (UFAs) remain unsigned, including several notable former Columbus Blue Jackets. Patrik Laine, Nick Blankenburg, James van Riemsdyk, and Danton Heinen are still searching for new contracts as the offseason progresses.

Patrik Laine, a talented winger, spent four seasons with the Blue Jackets from 2020-21 to 2023-24. His time in Columbus came to an end when he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens after requesting a move. Unfortunately, Laine struggled with injuries during his tenure with Montreal, managing to participate in only five games last season.

Nick Blankenburg also concluded his time with the Blue Jackets after three seasons in the NHL. He recorded personal bests last season, scoring eight goals and providing 16 assists for a total of 24 points in 61 games split between the Nashville Predators and the Colorado Avalanche. Given his recent performance, it is likely that this former Blue Jackets defenseman will secure a new contract soon.

James van Riemsdyk, who played for the Blue Jackets during the 2024-25 season, contributed significantly with 16 goals and 36 points across 71 games. He followed up that performance with a solid showing in the previous season, netting 15 goals and adding 31 points in 72 games with the Detroit Red Wings. As he weighs his options, the 37-year-old might find a one-year deal or a professional tryout (PTO) with another NHL team, depending on his decision regarding retirement.

Danton Heinen wrapped up his season with the Blue Jackets after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of the Egor Chinakhov trade. In his 33 games with Columbus, the seasoned forward tallied five goals and five assists, showcasing his experience and ability to contribute on the ice.
