The St. Louis Blues have bolstered their coaching staff with the addition of Joey Hishon as an organizational skills coach, a move announced by General Manager Alexander Steen on Wednesday. Hishon, 34, comes with a wealth of experience in player development, having spent the last several years with the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack.
Since retiring from professional hockey in 2017-18, Hishon has steadily climbed the ranks within the Attack organization. He initially joined as a scout and skills coach before earning promotions to assistant general manager and assistant coach midway through his first season. Hishon held these roles for three seasons, honing his coaching acumen. Although he has not been formally involved in hockey since 2022, he has continued to work as a private skills coach for NHL players, providing tailored development programs that emphasize comprehensive skill enhancement.
Before transitioning into coaching, Hishon was a highly regarded prospect, selected 17th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2010 NHL Draft. Unfortunately, his NHL career was limited to just 13 games during the 2014-15 season, where he scored one goal and two points. The bulk of his playing career unfolded in the AHL, where he accumulated 41 goals and 109 points over 141 games. Hishon also spent two seasons playing in Europe, competing in leagues in Russia and Sweden, but was unable to replicate his junior success.
Despite the challenges he faced as a player, Hishon has successfully transitioned to coaching, demonstrating his commitment to player development. In his new role with the Blues, he will collaborate closely with the development staff and players across the organization, focusing primarily on the NHL roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
