For Dmitry Buchelnikov, the journey from Russia to the NHL is more than just a career move; it’s the realization of a lifelong dream. Recently traded from the Detroit Red Wings to the St. Louis Blues, Buchelnikov had the chance to immerse himself in the vibrant sports culture of St. Louis, particularly through his first visit to a baseball stadium.
The 22-year-old left wing, acquired in the March 6 trade as part of the Justin Faulk deal, expressed his excitement about the experience. “It was a great experience for being in a baseball stadium,” he shared. “I’ve never been before. We were catching; never did that before. And what is that, like swinging (a bat)? This is an amazing time spending here.” Alongside baseball, Buchelnikov also took part in soccer activities, even scoring against MLS goalies during penalty kicks.
This visit marked Buchelnikov’s initial interaction with the Blues organization, a moment he had eagerly anticipated after the trade. “No, not really,” he responded when asked if he was surprised by the trade. “They just called me that I got traded. I told them, ‘Thank you for everything.’ But this is a new chapter for me.” His excitement was palpable as he reflected on the opportunity to join a team that believes in his potential.
Originally from Nizhny Tagil, Russia, Buchelnikov made the trip to North America to connect with his new team and the fan base that will be cheering him on. “I’m just switching teams and I’m here at development camp. It’s been amazing, my first time here. I like the city, I like what we did here for this week. Fun time,” he said, clearly enjoying his new surroundings.
Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 173 pounds, Buchelnikov has spent the past three seasons in the KHL, where he accumulated significant experience despite facing challenges. Last season was particularly tough as he rehabbed a shoulder injury, limiting him to 44 games with CSKA Moskva, where he tallied 25 points. “It was a really good year. Yeah, I had the injury in the mid-season,” Buchelnikov recalled. “I just played first time in playoffs in my adult career. It was a really good experience for me and for what I need to work on.”
As he sets his sights on the NHL, Buchelnikov is acutely aware of the areas he needs to improve. “Be more physical,” he emphasized. “That’s probably first because this is a tough league. You need to be ready every time. Also thinking more quick. This is why they call the NHL the best league in the world.” He believes that another season in the KHL will provide him with the necessary experience to prepare for the challenges ahead.
Having signed on for one more year with CSKA, Buchelnikov is committed to refining his skills. “This is like when I was a kid, the dream to play in the NHL. This needs to be a goal, not just a dream right now because you feel you have the skill, you have the potential. You need to work with that and be better every day,” he said, highlighting his determination to make that childhood dream a reality.
