Tate Southisene is making waves in the Atlanta Braves organization, showcasing his potential as one of the standout prospects of the 2025 draft class. Selected 22nd overall, the high school shortstop has quickly established himself as a player to watch, especially after a promising start to his 2026 season with the Low-A Augusta GreenJackets.
At just 18 years old, Southisene was one of the youngest players in the Carolina League when he made his debut last August. Although he faced challenges, posting a .215 batting average and a .539 OPS in 66 plate appearances, the young talent returned this season with a renewed focus. His impressive .297/.429/.500 slash line, featuring eight home runs, 30 RBIs, 46 runs scored, and 36 stolen bases in just 51 games, led to a well-deserved promotion to High-A Rome in June.
Coming from a family deeply rooted in baseball, with four brothers sharing similar aspirations, Southisene’s passion for the game is evident. In a recent conversation, he reflected on his journey into professional baseball, the adjustments he made, and the support from his family.
“The past year has definitely been cool,” Southisene said. “It’s a different experience just being out on my own, playing professional baseball and just kind of getting my feet wet, but I’ve been enjoying every part of it.”
Southisene praised the Braves organization for their support, stating, “They made it very easy just being able to get out of there and play my game.” His early experiences in professional ball helped him understand the expectations placed upon him, and he felt a sense of belonging right from the start.
As he transitioned into his second year, Southisene focused on refining his skills. “To be able to almost go out there and struggle a little bit as a high schooler, I was able to experience the failures,” he explained. This experience proved beneficial as he prepared for the 2026 season, allowing him to approach spring training with a clearer understanding of what to expect.
“I put on some good weight, got bigger, stronger, and faster,” he said. “But really with the swing, just make my adjustments. I had to be able to slow the game down.” Southisene’s commitment to improving his game has already paid off, as evidenced by his performance on the field.
He emphasized the importance of leveraging his speed, stating, “It was definitely the organization that brought it up. We worked on my running form, my stealing form and picking good counts to run on.” His ability to steal bases has become a critical aspect of his game, showcasing his versatility.
Southisene’s bond with teammates, particularly Eric Hartman, has also blossomed. The duo has developed a strong partnership since their first meeting in Augusta last season. “Playing with him in that one month was great,” Southisene recalled, highlighting the camaraderie that has formed as they navigate their careers together.
When discussing his promotion to Rome, Southisene expressed excitement and a sense of readiness. “I was very excited about the promotion. I was kind of a little shocked with a change of scenery, for sure. But I’m glad that I’m one step closer to the end goal,” he said.
As he continues to make strides in his career, Southisene credits his family’s support, particularly the mental aspect of the game. “It’s a very mental game, so just stay with your support system and just stick with it every single day,” he advised.
With a promising season ahead, Tate Southisene is certainly one to watch as he aims to make his mark in the Braves organization.
