Revamping the MLB Futures Game for Greater Exposure

MLB Baseball News

Since its inception in 1999, the MLB Futures Game has celebrated the sport’s brightest young talents as part of the All-Star Game festivities. Initially a seven-inning event, it transitioned to nine innings from 2008 to 2018, only to revert back to seven innings in 2019. Despite its storied history, the game is in dire need of a makeover to enhance its visibility and impact.

Many future stars have graced this field, including Kyle Schwarber, who was named MVP of the 2015 game in Cincinnati. With a two-run triple in front of friends and family, the then-Cubs prospect showcased his potential, while fellow future star Michael Conforto shone with a perfect 2-for-2 performance. The Futures Game serves as a vital showcase for emerging talent; however, this year, it struggled for attention as it took place at noon Eastern, directly competing with a full slate of MLB games.

The question arises: why hold an event that few are likely to watch? MLB didn’t even disclose attendance figures in the box score, highlighting the game’s diminished prominence. As part of what MLB now brands as All-Star Week, the league has curated an impressive lineup of events, including the MLB Draft, the Home Run Derby, and the All-Star Game, all receiving prime-time spotlight. It begs the question—why not elevate the Futures Game to a similar status?

On the Sunday before the All-Star Game, MLB typically avoids its usual Sunday Night Baseball broadcast to allow players ample time to travel to the host city. This presents a perfect opportunity to slot the Futures Game into that coveted Sunday night slot, providing a national platform and filling the TV schedule with baseball content.

Although NBC held the rights to this year’s game, it’s unlikely it would air on its main channel. However, cable options like NBC Sports Network and streaming services such as Peacock could serve as viable alternatives. While these may require subscriptions, they would eliminate the game’s competition with a packed schedule of 15 MLB matchups.

Some may suggest moving the game to Wednesday, but MLB’s preference for that date is to keep it open for weather-related contingencies surrounding the All-Star Game. Therefore, Sunday night remains the optimal choice. Additionally, returning to a nine-inning format would allow for more playing time, preventing pitchers from being limited to just a couple of pitches while still accommodating all participants.

While these suggestions may seem too sensible for MLB to adopt, hope remains—especially with next year’s All-Star Week set to take place at Wrigley Field.
