Calgary Flames’ Matt Coronato Shines at NHL’s Shoulder Check Mental Health Showcase

Calgary Flames

This week, Calgary Flames forward Matt Coronato is taking part in the Shoulder Check Showcase in Connecticut, a unique event that highlights the importance of mental health awareness during the NHL offseason. The showcase, which will be broadcast on the NHL Network, is an annual fundraiser for the HT40 Foundation, a cause close to many players’ hearts.

Founded by Rob Thorsen, the Shoulder Check Showcase aims to inspire a culture of support and compassion. The initiative holds special significance following the tragic loss of Rob’s son, Hayden, in 2022. In his memory, the Thorsen family established the HT40 Foundation to promote mental health awareness and encourage acts of kindness.

Set to take place at Sacred Heart University, this year’s event has attracted a star-studded lineup of NHL players eager to lend their support. Among them is Brett Pesce, the only representative from the New Jersey Devils, while a host of former and current New York Rangers, including Chris Kreider and Adam Fox, will also participate.

Although the full rosters for the 2023 and 2024 events are not yet available, Coronato is likely the first Flames player to join this initiative. As one of Calgary’s promising young talents, he exemplifies the Flames’ commitment to community engagement, a tradition that resonates deeply within the organization.

The Flames Foundation, alongside the Flames Alumni, has established strong ties to the Calgary community through various fundraising efforts, including the annual Celebrity Charity Golf Classic and the Hockey Alberta Foundation Golf Classic. Players like Mikael Backlund actively contribute to community programs, with Backlund recently recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow for his dedication.

Fans looking to watch the Shoulder Check Showcase can tune in on the NHL Network. Those wishing to support the HT40 Foundation can make donations at www.shouldercheck.org.
