Unsigned Free Agents: Evander Kane’s Uncertain Future After Sabres Stint

The NHL’s free agency period has entered its second month, and a number of former Buffalo Sabres players remain without contracts. As the offseason progresses, those yet to find a new home may start considering overseas opportunities or short-term deals, including professional tryouts, to secure a one-year contract.

Among the unsigned ex-Sabres, Evander Kane stands out as the most notable name. The seasoned winger, who has spent 16 years in the NHL, played three seasons in Buffalo after being acquired in a significant trade with Winnipeg in 2015. However, at 34 years old, Kane has developed a reputation for wearing out his welcome due to various off-ice issues.

Kane’s talent has never been questioned. A fourth overall pick by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009, he has consistently found the back of the net, scoring 20 or more goals in nine different seasons. Yet, his recent durability issues raise concerns; he played just 43 and 41 games in his first two seasons with Edmonton in 2022 and 2023, and he missed the entire 2024-25 season due to injuries before making a playoff return with the Oilers.

After Edmonton’s second consecutive Stanley Cup loss to Florida, the Oilers traded Kane to his hometown Canucks to alleviate his $5.125 million salary. In Vancouver, he managed to tally 31 points, including 13 goals and 18 assists, over 71 games. While he may still have something left in the tank, many teams may hesitate to sign him, weighing his potential contributions against the distractions he could bring.

Looking ahead, Kane is likely to secure a one-year deal from a team in need of roster depth. This arrangement could potentially allow for a mid-season trade if he performs well, but if he aims to join a contending team, a professional tryout may be his best path forward.
