Bryce Harper Returns to Right Field as Phillies Adjust Infield After Arráez Trade

Since then, he has primarily played first base or designated hitter. However, Mattingly noted that Harper’s arm is in good condition, allowing him to return to right field. Harper himself volunteered for the switch, which Mattingly described as a pivotal factor in facilitating the trade for Arráez.

“Harp had already kind of talked — we had to make sure Harp was serious about playing the outfield,” Mattingly explained. “I think that was kind of the key to doing anything.” He added that Harper would “ease” back into the outfield, although specifics on his reintegration remain unclear.

As for Turner, he has faced significant challenges defensively this season, accumulating 18 errors in 106 games, the second most in baseball. He is on track to exceed his career-high of 23 errors set in 2023, a season in which he led MLB in that category. Turner has narrowly avoided additional errors thanks to leniency from official scorers, such as during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 20, where only one of his four misplays was officially counted as an error. Yet, he did redeem himself at the plate that night, hitting two home runs to propel the Phillies to a 10-7 victory.

Given Turner’s defensive struggles, it seems the Phillies have opted to keep him at shortstop rather than risk further complications by having him adapt to a new position late in the season.
