A Revived Golden State Warriors: A Look at the 2024-25 NBA Season

A New Dawn for the Golden State Warriors

As the Golden State Warriors gear up for their annual training camp in Hawaii, there’s a unanimous view among the squad: they’re stronger than they were in the last season. “We have successfully upgraded our team,” Warriors’ General Manager, Mike Dunleavy, declared in a recent press conference. He further acknowledged the franchise’s restlessness for success, admitting, “We are probably one of the most impatient franchises at the moment, considering our current timeline.”

The Warriors’ Timeline and Key Players

The timeline Dunleavy referred to is intrinsically linked to superstar Stephen Curry, who recently committed to a two-year, $62.2 million contract extension, securing his stay with the Warriors till the 2026-27 season. Despite the running clock, Dunleavy affirmed his confidence in making the most of the coming seasons.

“There’s a delicate balance between impatience and lack of discipline,” Dunleavy continued. “I’m satisfied with the discipline we demonstrated during the summer, the roster we assembled, and the internal growth we’re expecting.”

Coach Steve Kerr’s Roster and Expectations

Warriors’ Coach Steve Kerr, believes he has a roster of 12 to 13 potential rotation players, a dilemma he has faced before. In recent years, this has led to more confusion and inconsistency, rather than creating a lethal depth in the team. This year, however, the situation is different, largely due to the new recruits and the internal growth Kerr anticipates.

“I’m expecting a big year from [Andrew Wiggins],” Kerr stated. Wiggins, who was instrumental to the Warriors’ 2022 title, missed a significant part of the 2022-23 season and another week last season due to personal reasons. However, Wiggins appears physically fit and motivated, ready to return to his top form from a few years ago, according to Kerr.

Areas of Improvement: Defense and Transition Offense

Kerr pointed to defense, especially transition defense, as a significant area for improvement. “Our transition defense plummeted last year. A key focus during the camp will be to bolster that,” Kerr stated. He also believes that the current personnel are better equipped to build a stronger defensive team, barring unforeseen injuries.

Regarding offensive strategy, Kerr stated that despite the drastically different roster from their most recent title-winning season, the team will continue to emphasize a fast pace and significant ball movement. However, he also admitted that with the changed roster, he needs to adjust his system to suit his players best. “It presents an opportunity to possibly play a bit differently,” Kerr said.

The Future of the Golden State Warriors

After a disappointing 46-win season without making the playoffs, Kerr and Dunleavy refuse to set a specific win total they want to achieve to consider the year successful. Nor are they ready to set a minimum or maximum expectation for their current group. However, they are certain about the urgency to maximize Curry’s potential.

“We’re always seeking to improve, enhance our team,” Kerr said. “We have a bunch of talented basketball players and the majority of our assets,” he added. “We’ve got the means to improve. We’ll be proactive. But the effort and urgency will always be present.”
