Alvin Kamara Commits to the Saints with a Two-Year Extension
Alvin Kamara’s New Contract Extension
According to Terrell, the Saints declared on Tuesday night that they had reached a two-year extension agreement with running back Alvin Kamara. The contract extension, which extends through 2026, is reportedly valued at around $24.5 million. Kamara seemed to verify this development earlier on his social media by reposting a reaction to the initial extension report.
Kamara’s Stance on Playing Without a Renewed Contract
Kamara stated in September that he was prepared to play through the season without signing a new contract. He began this season without any remaining guaranteed money on his 2020 contract. Kamara’s five-year, $75 million contract extension signed in 2020 was set to expire at the end of the 2025 season. However, with a $29 million salary cap and a due base salary of $22.4 million, the Saints would likely have had to renegotiate the contract.
The Impact of Kamara’s Contract on the Saints’ Salary Cap
Kamara’s contract was the last significant one the salary-capped Saints had not tackled this year, a fact Kamara acknowledged earlier in the offseason. Despite missing the final mandatory minicamp practice due to his contract, he participated normally in the training camp.
Kamara’s Loyalty to the Team and Fans
“I’m not concerned about it. I’m here to play and perform. I have no illnesses, no hidden injuries. I’m here with my teammates and coaches,” Kamara stated in September. He highlighted his love for the city, fans, and the support he received over the years. He believes it would be selfish not to reciprocate that support on the field.
Kamara’s Performance and Career Achievements
During this season, Kamara has 111 carries for 438 yards and six touchdowns, along with 34 receptions for 252 yards and an additional score. Kamara, a third-round pick in 2017 from Tennessee and Offensive Rookie of the Year that same season, has already been to five Pro Bowls. Despite trade rumors, Kamara revealed on X that he wishes to end his career with the Saints.
The Financial Implications of Kamara’s New Deal
NFL Network reported that $22 million of Kamara’s new contract will be guaranteed, liberating $18 million against the Saints’ 2025 salary cap.
