Assessing the Florida Panthers’ Outlook Against Sabres Rivals in the Atlantic Division

The Buffalo Sabres ended a 15-year postseason drought last season, clinching the Atlantic Division title and making it to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, following an offseason marked by significant trades involving Bowen Byram and Alex Tuch, their quest to defend their division crown or secure a top-three finish in the Atlantic has become considerably more challenging.

This week, we turn our attention to the seven other teams in the Atlantic Division to evaluate their standings compared to last season and gauge the competition they present for the Sabres.

The Florida Panthers, fresh off a lengthy journey that included three trips to the Stanley Cup Final and back-to-back championship victories, faced a tough season last year. The loss of team captain Aleksander Barkov to an ACL injury during training camp, coupled with the absence of star winger Matthew Tkachuk for a significant portion of the season, contributed to the Panthers missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

In the wake of last season, General Manager Bill Zito was proactive in the trade market, acquiring winger Brady Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators in a blockbuster deal, alongside other moves aimed at bolstering a healthy Panthers roster poised for a postseason return.

Among the notable additions are Brady Tkachuk, who averaged nearly a point-per-game with Ottawa last season, and veteran enforcer Garnet Hathaway, acquired from Philadelphia. The Panthers also signed depth forward Lars Eller, who played last season with Ottawa, to an incentive-laden one-year deal, and brought in 36-year-old Radko Gudas on a six-year, $9 million contract. However, the Panthers also faced some significant departures. Evan Rodrigues, who tallied 31 points last season, was traded to the Devils as part of the Markstrom deal, along with depth forward Jesper Boqvist. Additionally, AJ Greer signed a free agent deal with the Anaheim Ducks, while Sergei Bobrovsky moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Daniil Tarasov joined the Detroit Red Wings. Mackie Samoskevich was traded to the Seattle Kraken for a pair of draft picks.

The outlook for the Panthers appears promising, as they will benefit not only from their new acquisitions but also from the return of existing players at full health. Barkov, widely regarded as one of the top two-way forwards in the league, has already demonstrated his readiness by competing for Finland at the World Championships. With Tkachuk expected to return alongside a deep forward lineup that includes Sam Bennett, Sam Reinhart, Carter Verhaeghe, Brad Marchand, Eetu Luostarinen, and Anton Lundell, the Panthers boast a formidable group. On defense, they have Seth Jones, Aaron Ekblad, Niko Mikkola, and Gustav Forsling, further solidifying their roster.

However, questions loom in goal, especially with Bobrovsky’s departure. Markstrom, an experienced netminder, will need to step up as he plays behind a veteran squad known for solid defensive play, but concerns remain about whether the 36-year-old can adequately replace Bobrovsky.

While the Sabres capitalized on the Panthers’ decline last season, they may not enjoy the same fortune this time around. Florida seems to be assembling a team reminiscent of the Charlestown Chiefs, and barring any catastrophic injuries for a second consecutive year, they are likely to secure a top-three finish in the Atlantic.

Both the Panthers and Sabres face uncertainties in goal, and Florida’s defensive lineup, bolstered by two Stanley Cup victories, can be considered equal or superior to Buffalo’s. The Panthers also hold a distinct edge in experience and forward depth, even as the Sabres’ forward group boasts greater speed. The Sabres’ slight regression following the losses of Tuch and Byram may see them finishing behind the Panthers in the upcoming season.
