Avalanche’s Top 25 Under 25: Honorable Mentions Highlight Emerging Talent

The Colorado Avalanche’s “Top 25 Under 25” rankings have been unveiled, showcasing the bright young talent within the organization. This year, a collaborative effort from the Mile High Hockey staff led to an impressive pool of 35 players, creating a competitive landscape for the honorable mentions. With a diverse range of opinions among the seven writers involved, the decision on who to highlight was far from straightforward.

Among those just missing the cut are three promising players: a forward, a defenseman, and a goaltender, underscoring the depth across all positions in the Avalanche’s pipeline. Each of these players has shown potential that could see them rise in the ranks in the near future.

Nolan Roed, a forward from St. Cloud State, narrowly missed the top 25 by just one point, landing at #21 in last year’s rankings. The former seventh-round pick from the 2025 draft had a solid freshman year, accumulating 18 points and five goals over 36 games. Roed started strong, earning NCHC Rookie of the Week honors in late October, but saw a decline in production as conference play progressed. His versatility and scoring ability are traits the Avalanche covet, and at just 20 years old, he has plenty of time to develop further in college, with hopes of eventually securing a contract with Colorado.

In the goaltending department, Tobias Tvrznik has emerged as a noteworthy addition to the organization. Selected 126th overall in the fourth round of the 2026 draft, Tvrznik spent his previous year with the Wenatchee Wild in the WHL, where he posted a record of 16-18-4, complemented by a 3.10 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage. Standing at 6-foot-4, his combination of size and athleticism has caught the Avalanche’s attention. After previously playing in Czechia junior leagues, his performance in North America, where he ranked eighth among goaltenders, has positioned him as a prospect to watch as he continues to develop.

Saige Weinstien, a left defenseman, has had a unique journey since being signed by the Avalanche following the 2023 rookie camp. The six-foot-one defenseman played two seasons in the WHL with Spokane before stepping into professional hockey last year. Initially assigned to the Colorado Eagles, Weinstien spent time with the Utah Grizzlies in the ECHL, where he recorded two assists over 30 games. He also made a brief AHL appearance, scoring his first professional goal in January. However, injuries and a crowded organization have impacted his standing, leading to his drop from last year’s ranking of #17. This season presents a pivotal opportunity for Weinstien to establish himself in the AHL and potentially earn a call-up to the Avalanche, which could reignite his path within the organization.

In addition to these three, several other players in the Avalanche’s system are worth noting, including defensemen Gustav Stjernberg and Cole Tuminaro, goaltender Alexandre Raymond, and forwards Cooper Gay and defensemen Nikita Ishimnikov, Ondrej Ruml, and Chris Romaine.
