Basketball Legend Patrick Ewing Returns to the New York Knicks: A New Era Begins

Patrick Ewing: From Legendary Scorer to Knicks Ambassador

In a thrilling announcement made on a recent Friday, the New York Knicks declared the return of their all-time top scorer, Patrick Ewing, to the franchise. Now 62, Ewing has embraced a fresh role as an ambassador, poised to contribute to both the basketball and business facets of the Knicks’ operations.

Ewing’s Unwavering Allegiance to the Knicks

The partnership marks a new chapter in Ewing’s deep-rooted association with the Knicks. As he stated during the retirement of his iconic number 33 jersey, “I will always be a Knick and I will always be a New Yorker.” The basketball legend expressed his excitement about his new role and his enthusiasm for rejoining the team he holds in such high regard. “The Garden has always been my home, and I am eager to collaborate with Leon Rose, Coach Thibodeau, the team, and everyone else who makes this place so special,” Ewing shared in a statement.

Proud Legacy: Ewing’s Tenure As a Knicks Player

Chosen as the No. 1 overall pick by the Knicks in the 1985 NBA draft, Ewing consistently provided the backbone for New York’s lineup for 15 years. His impressive reign coincided with the franchise’s last stable era and its last two NBA Finals appearances (1994, 1999).

Ewing’s Post-Player Career and Coaching Stints

After hanging up his boots in 2002, Ewing embarked on a 14-year journey as an NBA assistant coach. He served on the coaching staff of the Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic, Charlotte Hornets, and Houston Rockets. In Houston, he worked alongside former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy. Interestingly, current Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau was also a part of that staff and served as an assistant under Van Gundy during Ewing’s later Knicks years.

In 2017, Ewing took over as coach at Georgetown, his alma mater, leading the Hoyas to an unexpected Big East tournament victory at Madison Square Garden in 2021. However, following a slump in the program’s performance over his last two seasons, Georgetown parted ways with Ewing in 2023.

The Knicks’ Revival and Ewing’s Return

Ewing’s return comes at a time when the Knicks franchise is experiencing a resurgence, rejuvenating the fanbase. During the team’s successful journey to the Eastern Conference semifinals last season, Ewing, along with other notable former Knicks like John Starks, regularly received standing ovations from the fully packed Madison Square Garden. Ewing’s return is anticipated to fuel this renewed enthusiasm, marking a new era for the franchise.
