Blake Hunt is ready to make his mark in Major League Baseball after a winding journey through the minors and a series of trades. The San Diego Padres drafted him as their Competitive Balance pick in the 2017 draft, signing him for $1.6 million. After progressing to High-A Fort Wayne, Hunt was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays as part of the Blake Snell deal in 2020. Following a stint in the Rays organization, he found himself with the Seattle Mariners in November 2023, only to be traded again to the Baltimore Orioles in May 2024.
Hunt’s time with the Orioles saw him called up for just a day in July, but he remained on the taxi squad for a month without further promotion. After being designated for assignment in January 2025, he returned to Seattle, where he was optioned back to Triple-A Tacoma. In the 2025 season, he demonstrated his potential with a solid .272/.368/.452 batting line, hitting eight home runs and driving in 35 runs. Despite being designated for assignment again, he cleared waivers and continued his development with Tacoma.
After opting for free agency at the end of the 2025 season, Hunt was re-signed by the Padres on December 16. Unfortunately, his spring training began with an oblique injury that sidelined him until May, when he began a rehab assignment with the ACL Padres. His performance there paved the way for his Triple-A debut on June 3 with the El Paso Chihuahuas, where he played in eight games, maintaining a .269/.375/.462 line with two home runs.
At the start of spring camp, manager Craig Stammen had identified Hunt as the third catcher option for the Padres, but injuries shifted the depth chart. Rodolfo Durán stepped into the role following Hunt’s injury, and with Luis Campusano’s fractured toe, Durán has proven his worth as a reliable backup. Hunt, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 215 pounds, is the largest catcher on the Padres’ roster and is known for his plus-power and quick pop time behind the plate.
Now, Hunt is poised to make his MLB debut after front-line catcher Freddy Fermin was placed on the seven-day concussion IL due to a warm-up pitch incident. Fermin has faced multiple direct hits to his mask this season, and following this latest incident, it was determined he would need time off. Durán took over catching duties in Fermin’s absence and is expected to start against the Baltimore Orioles, while Hunt is likely to make his debut on Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals.
With Hunt’s impending debut, the Padres continue to showcase their minor league talent, as he becomes the third player this season from their minor leagues to step onto the MLB stage, joining outfielder Jase Bowen and Rodolfo Durán. Together with outfielder Samad Taylor and utility man Nick Solak, they represent the depth of the Padres’ organization as they adapt to injuries among their regular players.
