Recent moves, including a surprising goalie swap between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Philadelphia Flyers, as well as the Colorado Avalanche sending Ross Colton to the Nashville Predators for draft picks, illustrate the ongoing activity.

Gallagher’s agent has previously indicated that the Vancouver Canucks have shown interest in the veteran. However, if the Canadiens are unable to finalize a trade, they may consider buying out Gallagher’s contract. This scenario could arise if trade partners are asking for too much in negotiations, complicating Gallagher’s potential exit. While a trade would benefit the Canadiens, Gallagher’s contract could also serve as a strategic asset for teams looking to reach the salary cap floor, providing general manager Kent Hughes with leverage.

For example, if the Canucks were to trade Elias Pettersson and his substantial contract, they might find themselves needing to meet the cap floor, making Gallagher’s contract an attractive option. Last season, Hughes successfully maneuvered by trading a fifth-round pick to the San Jose Sharks while taking on Gannon Laroque’s contract to relieve the burden of Carey Price’s hefty deal. The Sharks benefited from the move as they were nearing the 50-contract limit.

In an ideal scenario, the Canadiens would trade Gallagher early in the offseason, allowing Hughes to focus on addressing the team’s immediate needs.
