Buffalo Sabres Face Tough Trade Decisions Ahead of Free Agency

The Buffalo Sabres find themselves navigating a complex landscape as they approach the summer roster construction phase. With limited cap space, General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen may need to consider trades to either clear salary or capitalize on potential assets, particularly regarding winger Alex Tuch, who is set to become a free agent on July 1.

Tuch, 30, is expected to be one of the most sought-after free agents alongside Tampa Bay defenseman Darren Raddysh. Currently, the Sabres have just $12.9 million in available cap space, and the gap between what Tuch’s representatives are seeking and what the Sabres are willing to offer makes his return to Buffalo increasingly unlikely. The salary cap is set to rise to $104 million this offseason, complicating matters further.

One potential strategy for the Sabres is to trade Tuch’s negotiating rights before July 1 to a team seeking exclusive talks, although that might only yield a mid-round draft pick. A more lucrative option could involve a sign-and-trade scenario, similar to what the Toronto Maple Leafs executed with Mitch Marner last June. In that case, the Leafs negotiated an eight-year, $96 million extension with Marner before trading him to the Vegas Golden Knights, who needed to clear cap space to accommodate the winger’s contract.

For Tuch, the Sabres are the only team able to offer him a long-term deal, as free agency would limit him to a maximum of a six-year contract under the NHL’s new collective bargaining agreement. A sign-and-trade could be advantageous for both parties, as it would lower Tuch’s average annual value (AAV) and potentially provide the Sabres with a higher draft pick, player, or prospect in return.

Additionally, Kekalainen faces decisions regarding restricted free agent defenseman Michael Kesselring. The 26-year-old had an injury-plagued season, managing only 34 games with two assists and 50 penalty minutes. Initially projected to be a top-four defenseman, he is now likely to find himself on the bottom pairing. With Kekalainen focused on extending Bowen Byram this summer, re-signing Kesselring for more than a one-year deal seems improbable. Given the scarcity of right-handed defensemen in free agency, the Sabres could explore trading Kesselring for a valuable asset that aligns with their future plans.
