Buffalo Sabres Prospect Spotlight: Norwin Panocha’s Journey

Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres have cultivated one of the NHL’s most promising prospect pools, largely due to their strategic high draft selections fueled by recent playoff absences. The organization’s keen eye for talent is evident, as recent picks like 2023 first-rounder Zach Benson have made significant impacts, while 2024 top pick Konsta Helenius has emerged as a standout among AHL prospects.

As the Sabres gear up for training camp in mid-September, we turn our attention to the club’s top 40 prospects. These players, all 25 years old or younger, hold rights with the Sabres or are under AHL or NHL contracts, and have played fewer than 82 NHL games.

Among these talents is Norwin Panocha, a 6’2”, 190 lb. defenseman drafted 205th overall from Eisbaren Berlin in the DEL during the 2023 NHL Draft in Nashville. Opting to transition to North America, Panocha joined Chicoutimi in the QMJHL, where he recorded 15 assists in 52 regular-season games and added one assist in eight playoff games. However, his time with the Sagueneens ended as he was released following the season.

Following his release, Panocha was selected in the CHL Import Draft by the Prince Albert Raiders in the WHL, but his stint there was brief, as he played only three games before being dropped. A short tenure with the Green Bay in the USHL and participation in his second consecutive World Junior Championship for Germany followed, but he ultimately returned to Berlin, where he managed two assists in 16 DEL games.

Last season saw Panocha splitting time between Berlin and a loan to Lausitzer Füchse in the DEL’s secondary tier. Looking ahead, he is set to play for the Iserlohn Roosters in the DEL next season, according to Elite Prospects. Recently, Panocha attended the Sabres Development Camp, where he showcased his potential as the organization holds one additional year of rights before needing to sign him.
