The Calgary Flames have been relatively quiet this offseason, but that doesn’t mean general manager Craig Conroy is done making moves. Far from it, as the Flames remain a focal point in the NHL trade market, with teams keeping a close eye on potential acquisitions.
Despite having reshaped much of their roster in recent months, Calgary continues to draw interest from rival clubs. Notable names like center Morgan Frost and defenseman Zach Whitecloud have surfaced as trade targets, as reported by David Pagnotta. “Morgan Frost’s name still out there. They have others they’re willing to listen on. There are teams interested in Whitecloud still, and so on and so on. So this is going to be an interesting summer,” he noted.
Conroy finds himself in a position of strength, having already made significant trades that have transformed the Flames’ future. The departures of Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights, MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth, Nazem Kadri to the Colorado Avalanche, and longtime leader Blake Coleman have left Calgary with a wealth of draft capital—30 selections over the coming years, including two first-round picks in each of the next three drafts.
This enviable position allows Conroy to be patient, waiting for the right offers that would genuinely enhance Calgary’s long-term outlook. Among the most logical trade candidates is Morgan Frost, who enters the final year of his contract after a career-best season with 22 goals and 43 points. With centers in high demand, a productive forward like Frost is naturally drawing attention across the league.
Earlier this summer, Frost’s name had even been mentioned among potential trade targets for the Avalanche, but that speculation fizzled out once Kadri rejoined the team. Acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers alongside Joel Farabee, Frost has found his place in Calgary’s middle six and is continuing to raise his profile.
Meanwhile, Zach Whitecloud, who recently arrived in Calgary as part of the Andersson trade, is also generating buzz in trade discussions. The 29-year-old right-shot defenseman has quickly become a coveted asset due to his physical, reliable style of play. With a Stanley Cup ring from Vegas’ 2023 championship run and an affordable $2.75 million cap hit through the 2027-28 season, he checks all the boxes for playoff contenders.
Reports indicate that the Anaheim Ducks have shown particular interest in Whitecloud as they seek to bolster their right side after losing key players like John Carlson and Radko Gudas. This situation further emphasizes Calgary’s strong position; with Whitecloud being cost-controlled and experienced, the Flames can afford to hold onto him unless an offer that clearly exceeds his value comes along.
While Jonathan Huberdeau has occasionally surfaced in trade rumors, those discussions seem more speculative than substantive. With a hefty $10.5 million cap hit and coming off major surgery, moving Huberdeau would be a challenging task for Calgary. Finding a team willing to absorb that contract under the current circumstances would be highly improbable.
As the free-agent market begins to dwindle and teams increasingly shift their focus to trades, Calgary’s phone is likely to ring continuously this summer. However, Conroy is under no obligation to respond immediately. With a strong collection of draft assets and no pressing need to shed salary, the Flames can afford to listen while maintaining their asking prices. If a team becomes desperate, Calgary is well-positioned to capitalize, but until then, standing firm may be the best strategy.
