Capitals Edge Golden Knights 3-2, Fueled by Dubois’ Stellar Performance

Washington Capitals

In a thrilling encounter at Capital One Arena, Pierre-Luc Dubois showcased his scoring prowess with two goals and an assist, leading the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday night. The Capitals displayed their offensive firepower during a dominant second period, scoring all three of their goals within that frame.

Jakob Chychrun contributed to the Capitals’ scoring spree, netting his 22nd goal of the season. The Golden Knights, however, made things interesting in the third period, with Braeden Bowman and Tomas Hertl finding the back of the net to narrow the deficit.

This win brought the Capitals within two points of the New York Islanders for third place in the Metropolitan Division and kept them in striking distance of Boston for the Eastern Conference’s second wild card. Since the Olympic break, Washington has shown impressive form, winning both of their games and six of their last seven.

On the other side, the Golden Knights saw their three-game winning streak come to an end despite the return of five Olympians to the lineup. Vegas had previously played without key players Jack Eichel, Noah Hanifin, Mark Stone, Mitch Marner, and Shea Theodore. Their presence was felt on the ice, but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory.

After an explosive third period against the Kings, where they scored five goals in a 6-4 win, the Golden Knights nearly pulled off another comeback against the Capitals. Bowman ignited the rally by breaking up Logan Thompson’s shutout bid early in the third period, and Hertl’s power-play goal tightened the score to 3-2 with just over ten minutes left to play.

With the game hanging in the balance, Stone was penalized for high-sticking with 4:24 remaining, but Thompson remained steadfast, turning aside short-handed opportunities from Brayden McNabb and Marner to preserve the lead.

Dubois opened the scoring just 49 seconds into the second period, beating Akira Schmid high to the blocker side. Just over two and a half minutes later, Aliaksei Protas set up Dubois for a quick strike, extending the lead to 2-0. Chychrun’s shot from the right circle capped off the Capitals’ scoring, sneaking under the crossbar for a 3-0 advantage.

The successful line of Dubois, Protas, and Tom Wilson was instrumental in Washington’s offensive output, with both Protas and defenseman Rasmus Sandin contributing two assists each. Dubois has made a remarkable return to form, tallying three goals and two assists in just three games since coming back from surgery for abdominal and adductor injuries.
