Hayden Wesneski Returns to Chicago Cubs Line-Up Following Injury Recovery
The Chicago Cubs announced on Friday, Sep 20, 2024, that they are reinstating their right-hand pitcher, 26-year-old Hayden Wesneski, after a 15-day hiatus due to a right forearm strain. With Wesneski’s activation, the team has also announced the designation of right-handed pitcher Shawn Armstrong for assignment.
Wesneski’s Comeback
Wesneski, who took to the mound last on July 19, holds a record of 3-6, with an earned run average (ERA) of 3.94. He has given up 21 walks and struck out 58 batters in a cumulative 61⅔ innings across 25 games, seven of which he started. Since joining the Cubs, Wesneski has pitched in parts of three seasons, accumulating a 9-13 record with a 3.96 ERA, 60 walks, and 174 strikeouts over 184 innings in 65 games, 22 of which he started.
Armstrong’s Next Chapter
In contrast, 34-year-old Armstrong has not had the best run with the Cubs this season. He posted an 0-1 record, a 4.91 ERA, and has given up 4 walks while striking out 4 batters in 7⅓ innings over eight games. In addition to the Cubs, Armstrong pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays in 38 games (seven starts), and for the St. Louis Cardinals in 11 relief appearances this season. His season’s total stands at 3-3 with one save, a 4.86 ERA, 25 walks, and 66 strikeouts in 66⅔ innings over 57 games, seven of which he started.
Armstrong’s career spanning a decade has seen him play for seven teams. He boasts a career record of 11-8 with eight saves, and a 4.15 ERA over 299 games, 16 of which he started.
Upcoming Games and Cubs’ Standing
As the Cubs (78-75) are set to host the Washington Nationals on Friday, they find themselves seven games shy of securing the final National League wild-card spot. With Wesneski’s return, the team is hopeful to bolster their chances in the remaining games.
