Rick Nash Ascends to Presidential Role in Columbus Blue Jackets’ Hockey Operations

The Columbus Blue Jackets have made a significant announcement on Friday, appointing the legendary Rick Nash as their new president of hockey operations. Nash, a beloved figure within the franchise, was the No. 1 pick in the 2002 NHL draft and devoted a decade of his career to the Blue Jackets, playing from 2002 to 2012.

A Franchise Legend Brings His Expertise to the Top

Nash boasts an impressive record as the franchise’s all-time leader in goals (289) and assists (258). After a successful career with the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins, he retired in 2018 and returned to Columbus a year later in a special advisory role to the general manager.

At 40, Nash advanced to the position of director of player development and has now been promoted to president of hockey operations.

High Praise for Nash’s Contribution

In a statement, General Manager Don Waddell expressed his confidence in Nash’s capabilities. “Rick Nash is an incredibly astute individual who has become a crucial part of our hockey operations leadership team,” said Waddell. “His passion for the Columbus Blue Jackets and our community is evident and he’s been an invaluable asset to me since my arrival here in late May. Rick has left an indelible mark on this organization as a player and will undoubtedly continue to do so in his new role as director of hockey operations.”

Nash’s Legacy with the Blue Jackets

Nash’s tenure as a Blue Jacket was marked by numerous accolades. He served as captain from 2008 to 2012, was a five-time All-Star, and won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the NHL’s top goal scorer in 2004. In recognition of his contributions, the franchise retired his No. 61 jersey in March 2022.

Additional Appointments

In addition to Nash’s promotion, the Blue Jackets also announced other key appointments. Zach Abdou has been named senior manager of hockey operations, while Basil McRae will take on the role of the new director of pro scouting. These strategic moves highlight the franchise’s commitment to strengthening their operations and improving their performance in the upcoming seasons.
