Cubs’ Jameson Taillon to Miss Time with Hamstring Strain

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs face a challenging road ahead as they will be without starting pitcher Jameson Taillon until after the All-Star break due to a strained left hamstring. Taillon’s injury occurred during a game against the San Francisco Giants, forcing him to exit in the second inning. Following this setback, he was placed on the 15-day injured list just as the Cubs were set to open a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies.

In response to Taillon’s injury, the Cubs made several roster moves. They reinstated outfielder and infielder Matt Shaw from the 10-day injured list and recalled right-handers Ethan Roberts and Tyler Ferguson from Triple-A Iowa. Additionally, designated hitter Kevin Alcántara was optioned back to Iowa, while pitcher Trent Thornton was placed on the paternity list.

This latest blow to the Cubs’ pitching staff comes at a time when they are already missing key players, including Matthew Boyd, Cade Horton, and Justin Steele. Boyd, who was the team’s opening-day starter, is nearing a return and is expected to pitch over the weekend in San Francisco.

Taillon, who has struggled this season with a record of 2-5 and a 5.19 ERA, managed to throw just one inning before leaving the game after allowing a run. Manager Craig Counsell expressed concern over the impact of Taillon’s absence, stating, “After the All-Star break, I think, would be what we’re shooting for. The margins become … it makes losing somebody else more daunting, obviously.” With the team needing to adapt, Counsell noted that players will have opportunities to step up until the All-Star break.

Shaw, who has been contributing with a batting average of .242, three home runs, and 12 RBIs, is ready to make an impact. “Ready to help in any way I can,” Shaw said. “Whatever that looks like, whatever that kind of manifests into, whether it’s some of those late-inning pinch running situations, I look forward to those.”
