Veteran forward David Perron has stepped back into the Detroit Red Wings dressing room with the familiarity of a long-lost friend, ready to make an impact as the team strives for its first playoff berth in a decade. Re-acquired from the Ottawa Senators just before the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline, Perron brings a wealth of experience and leadership that the Red Wings missed last season.
A Stanley Cup champion with the St. Louis Blues in 2019, Perron played a pivotal role in the Senators’ playoff run last spring, scoring twice in an opening-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite the Senators ultimately falling in six games, Perron’s contributions highlighted his ability to perform under pressure.
Currently recovering from sports hernia surgery he underwent in January, Perron is not yet ready to hit the ice for his second debut with Detroit. General Manager Steve Yzerman has indicated that Perron could return to play in approximately two weeks, a prospect that excites both the player and the fanbase.
In an interview with the NHL Network, Perron shared his thoughts on his time in Ottawa, revealing that he never quite felt like he fit perfectly with the team. “I’m not sure the fit was ever all that perfect for me on this team, but at the same time, they provided me with a great chance to come in and do my thing,” he said. Yet, after his first practice back with the Red Wings, he emphasized that he did enjoy his experience in Ottawa despite the challenges.
“I really enjoyed my time there and I enjoyed the group of guys,” he explained. “Sometimes that’s just how it goes, but there’s no negative about it. I went there and worked as hard as I could every day and tried to put my best foot forward, but sometimes things just don’t click there the right way.”
As Perron looks ahead, he is eager to help revive the playoff spirit in Detroit. “I think this team and this city, it’s what we push for,” he expressed. “At the end of the day, that’s what you want to play for: those meaningful games and a playoff-type atmosphere.” He reflected on the importance of experience in the playoffs, noting, “It probably took me four or five runs before I started feeling comfortable, truly in a playoff atmosphere,” highlighting his commitment to aiding his teammates in their growth.
